A Workout Buddy That Really Motivates

Monday, August 31, 2009

With vacations and kids at home for summer I took a hiatus from the gym and spent over two months working out at home -a frustrating experience of constant interruption. Plus my kids seemed to think it was too fun to use my stuff and misplace it afterward.

Today I went back for a couple of my favorite classes. Besides the wonderful yoga session that left me feeling ten feet taller, I got to see Jane.

I met Jane in a high impact aerobics/ fusion strength and core class. We were a couple of average looking women standing in the back of the room trying to fight middle age spread. Well, that was my issue anyway. A few classes later she said she was recovering from some health issues. I guessed she had a workout sprain or something given how she looked.

Every Monday and Wednesday we'd spend an hour together, each burning over 800 calories a week from that class. When I got down that I wasn't losing weight she asked how many inches I lost in my waist. She had already lost 4. I never took measurements before and it was a lightbulb moment! A couple weeks later I was thrilled to report 2 inches gone. And Jane was so excited for me!

A week or two later she admitted to me that what she was recovering from was Breast Cancer. That first class was only 3 months after her last treatment. Chemo had left her feeling flabby, and the steroids made her so puffy. My extra five or ten pounds seemed downright silly then.

My heart skipped a beat today when I saw her. I cannot wait to go back on Wednesday and catch up with her on her summertime progress.

Seeing Jane inspires.

You may have seen her too.

Her picture has been popping up in magazines everywhere, encouraging people to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race like she did. She is the woman with the scarf on her head, beads of sweat running down her, and holding a sign saying "Yesterday was my last day of Chemo."

Yeah, your right it makes my 10 pounds seem stupid. But the other side of that coin, is that we should maybe think about weight loss differently, i.e. "getting healthy" versus "losing weight" for vanity.

I feel that the health reasons to exercise far outweigh the vanity reasons, and a lot of times take second place in our quest to be "skinnier".

I am so glad your friend came through her journey well. Sometimes it is difficult for us to realize how lucky we really are and it takes an angel such as Jane to remind us. I am glad that you have reunited with a workout buddy and friend. Good luck to you both in your fitness endeavors.
