2nd full week of teaching

Monday, August 24, 2009

Today was the beginning of my second full week of teaching. Boy, I forget how much energy it takes to teach school. I'm exhausted. Just trying to get to know 170 students is an enormous task. My students are fun though and I'm excited to be their teacher.

This is my 16th year of teaching high school English. This year, I have a great schedule--2 AP Lit classes, 1 Reading for Pleasure, and 3 Honors 10 English. I have to admit I have it pretty nice this year. After last year, this is heaven. However, I think that being on a diet makes it harder for me to keep up my energy level and I really miss being able to have comfort food throughout the day (chocolate's my favorite although I do love potato chips).

Anyway, I didn't gain this weight overnight. It crept up over the past 2 years, and so I can't expect it to disappear in a few weeks just because I've cut back and started walking a little. If it was that easy, everyone would be thin, including me.

Anyway, time to go for a short walk. My foot is still healing. The weather is cooling down and fall is in the air. I must admit, I love the fall. Living in the desert during the summer is difficult; I'm still a British girl at heart. I miss the rain.

Thanks sparkpeople for helping me stay strong emoticon

Teacher workdays start on Wednesday for me. I'm always optimistic at the start of a new school year. I discovered SP 2 weeks ago and I've really been pushing on my diet and exercise for the past 2 weeks in preparation for back to school. I'm so proud of the steady progress I have seen with the help of SP....but once school starts, sticking with the program will definitely be a challenge. I'm an elementary school SLP and my therapy schedule frequently forces me to skip or shorten lunch to attend an IEP meeting, do an evaluation, squeeze in a screening or missed session. ... By the end of the day, I'm am so hungry. Due to my chaotic schedule, I've always been a packer; however, I've just got to carve out the time to eat it before I'm driving home to start dinner.....I also agree about the goodies that are always around....The first day of school starts with the PTO provided breakfast and goodies at the trainings and staff meetings. I think that being faithful to my nutrition tracking will help me stay focused.... 10 more lbs to go. Good luck to all of you educators out there! emoticon

Thursday is the students first day back at school where I teach. I am looking forward to it, but I do remember how tiring it can be. I bought myself a special lunchbox and plan on packing my meals every day instead of getting takeout.

170 students and I'm just worried about getting to know the new kindergarten class and the fourth graders, that I didn't have last year.
Keeping on track is always hard here, too many great but not diet-friendly snacks in the teacher's workroom. Just keep working at it and I know you will find success:)
