The Seat belt Fit
Wednesday, August 12, 2009
As I prepared for my trip to Trinidad I had this recurring vision of trying to fasten the seat belt and it would not fit. I had been working out and eating right since getting on the wagon with Spark People, but I still have a long way to go. During a trip to London I had witnessed a stewardess delivering a seat belt extension to a passenger and that memory has played out in my mind every time I travel by air. It is not just a joke, but a real concern since I have broad hips. I boarded the plane apprehensively and as I sat down, I immediately reached for the seat belt. I wanted to buckle up before many people had boarded. At first I couldn't find it, then I realized that I was sitting on it. After a few attempts at tugging it from below me without getting up, I had the two ends in my hands. Gingerly I brought them together and as I heard the click, a wave of gratitude and relief rushed over my body. It fit!!! The seat belt fit!!! I do not need an extension!!! Once again I was safe, at least for this leg of the trip; I still had the return trip after 5 days of Caribbean cooking. During my time in Trinidad, I tried my best to eat healthily, and each time I was offered ice cream or cakes or a second helping of something, I would hear the click and refuse, or take a very small portion. I told everyone why - I need the seat belt to fit. My family and friends always laughed, and I'm sure that one day I too would see it as a joke and laugh, but for right now, it is reality. I never want to have to ask the stewardess for an extension, and with the help of Spark People, I will never have to.
