#38: Respect Yourself

Thursday, August 06, 2009

Why are you trying to lose weight? Why are you trying to gain better health?
Are these things you do for yourself? To build up your self-esteem? To energize your ego? If so, you're on your way to success.

We shouldn't begin our journey to fitness to please others, whether they be our spouse, relatives, co-workers or friends. Doing so will ultimately not be personally satisfying.

It is nearly impossible to fulfill the varying expectations of other people. Trying to appease them and their hopes for us will generate in us a great amount of frustration when we fail to change enough to satisfy them. Trying to conform to someone else's idea of how they want us to look will lead to us becoming demoralized when they change their minds about how they want us to be.

Instead, our journeys to better health should begin with respect for ourselves. We should acknowledge that this is something we do just for us. Our mental image of how we want to be is the image that counts and is going to allow us to attain our goals and ultimately be satisfied with the new us. We will not allow someone else to control us and decide how we should look.

Have respect for yourself. Make this journey a major gift you give yourself, with minor gifts of achievement along the way.

This is what we do for us.

So true, so very true. And, SparkLove, respect and responsibility go hand in hand.

I look at it this way Lou. . If someone gave me a brand new car or even if I bought the car myself , I would be aware that certain responsibilities came with it. Like change the oil etc. I would have to take care of this car for peak performance. The Lord gave Adam and Eve , a beautiful garden , but he expected them to take care of it. On those same lines , every one of us has been given life with a marvelous body, and it is our responsibility to take care of our bodies for peak performance.

I was negligent in this responsibility for whatever reason and now I am fat and out of shape and not running at peak performance. It is really hard once you get out of shape to get to where you should be, but it is not impossible and with The Lords help" We can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us".

God has put it in your heart Lou, to lose weight and shape up and you are right .....you should follow your own heart and not do this to please or impress others. You might fall off the wagon many times, get down and discouraged , even feel like giving up but you will get there someday just keep on praying for The Lords help. Let his Spirit direct you, because there are many unhealthy ways to lose weight and lots of folks who will be happy to direct your path there , but you want to do what is best for your body not just lose weight . There are many thin unhealthy people in the world so size is not the total sum of what we want to accomplish. Have a great day!
