The push toward final exams!

Saturday, August 01, 2009

Hi All -

Just to get new SparkFriends up to speed, here's the link to my graduate program:

It's an aggressive, 18-month program that prepares technical people to be leaders and managers. I've been in software development for 10+ years and felt it was time to either move up or move out (software quality assurance is not for the weak!).

But I've learned that school can be an energy drain (best) or an excuse generator (worst) to my goals at SP. Last term (my first) I let school rule... and I'm still carrying the pounds to prove it! This term I decided to try some balance, especially because school and work are cutting into my usual summer biking schedule. I'm still gaining (dammit!) but I've got a close eye on it.

Goal are key, I've learned. Just like school: Chapters to read, homework assignments, quizzes / tests and papers. I need fitness goals to chart and map so I know where I'm at relative to where I want to be.

I'm not where I want to be at SP but the grades are pretty good. That's OK (for now) but I know I need health for the long run! It's time to see what I can do or plan to do that I can tackle AND carry into the next term to keep me on track.

Ideas? Suggestions? I'm listening, so bring it on!! ~ Trish

Stress seems to be a killer when it comes to weight gain in my circle. Sometimes the stress and lack of sleep due to the stress plays such havoc on my weight it is quite scary.

The few things I would tend to do during stressful exams or when my nerves were shot was to make certain my adrenals were functioning the way they should. I often used acupuncture to help boost my adrenals when my sleep suffered, which improved my clarity and stamina/energy levels as well. When I slept better, the weight didn't creep on like it once would. You might even check into adrenal support via means of nutritional diet. I found the book Prescriptions For Nutritional Healing valuable in helping me determine what foods I needed to avoid or incorporate into my diet. They also have another which is extremely helpful for the same reasons and that is Prescriptions for Dietary Wellness.

Maybe just a few changes here and there will help you get through this time frame without too much damage to boot.

One little thing I'm happy my husband talked me into was a pedometer, which makes me aware of how much or how little I am moving throughout the day. Since we have purchased them, I love being able to work on increasing my numbers.

Hoping this week finds you well and that you are able to face next term with new found strength!
