Blog 2 of 2 Today - Feeling Appreciated

Monday, July 27, 2009

So my second blog today has to do with being appreciated and how wonderful it is to be appreciated by someone out of the blue - someone who doesn't want anything from you at all!

It was Wednesday of last week and I was at the Y walking toward the time clock to clock in before teaching my class. I was walking with my friend Julie and were just chit chatting away. We run into Christine, one of the other Y staffers. She stops us and says to me

"I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you."

I looked at her and smiled and said jokingly "Have you been drinking on the job again?" knowing full well that she never has and certainly wasn't that night but you know how people get after a few drinks? They suddenly love everyone??

She says "Shut up! NO! Of course not! I just really look up to you and think of you as a mother."

Oh Great! Now I'm OLD! LOL. So I ask her, cause I can't remember "How old are you?" and she says "20"

OK, I'm 41, it is so very possible for this young woman to be my child if I had had a kid at 21... DO YOU KNOW HOW SCARY THAT IS???? I say to her "Yup, I could be your mother!" and laugh and she goes on to tell me that she feels that she can talk to me and be open with me - and that was really neat :) I hugged her, told her I loved her too and we parted so I could go clock in!

But it really did make me feel really good.

The next day I am telling Betty - who is retiring from here in November - this story and she says, "Well, I'm old enough to be your mother and I look up to you. You are a very giving and caring person."

WOW! I certainly wasn't going to be fitting my head out the door with all this adulation!

However, it's funny how we ride a roller coaster of emotion. That night I head back to the Y to workout and I'm feeling tired and I start to really doubt myself, if people like me, and I'm edgey and I think to myself "Wait a minute... Kris, you're tired. You haven't had enough sleep, you ate some crappy food today, you're working out too much and you've worn yourself down. You feel this way because of that not because it's real."

And it's true. A good night's sleep, some good food and rest and I feel all better :)

Moral of the story - I don't know - is there a moral to this story? I do know that it's wonderful to have someone tell you that they appreciate you and I'm getting better at recognizing when I need to take care of myself. All good things to know!

oh and I was going to say...if you DID have a 21 year old, you'd probably look closer to 40 coz of all the worry going into that child! I'm thinking my kids lately, 19, 18, 16 and 13 (2 hubby's - 2 mine) are going to end up putting us both in a retirement home early. Just waiting for those gray hairs I'm going to need to bleach! Take care :).

This is great :). And even better that you're thinking about it all and recognizing these positive things about yourself. It's good stuff kiddo! You look the very least. Beautiful! It's all that healthy eating, exercise and rest you're getting. Love the blogs. :)

Wow, I bet you're really engaging to spend time with in real life... and yeah, every time I feel like "I just can't do this anymore," I always take a step back and realize I was just really tired, or hungry, or working too hard, or too stressed, or something at the time, and the feeling is always temporary and then I go back to feeling great with my healthy lifestyle.
