Scale Shock

Got a big shock yesterday. Somehow I've managed to painlessly (not counting sore muscles) lose over 20 pounds since joining SparkPeople.

I originally joined because I wanted to develop a consistent exercise habit and liked the reports and tools SparkPeople had available. However, when I visited my doctor in May she sent me home with FOUR! maintenance medications. I came home and explored the Nutrition Tracker for the first time.

Simply logging what I eat each day was pretty revealing. Wow - did I REALLY get 50% of my calories from fat today?!? How is it possible my calcium intake is so low when I'm using 1/4 cup of cream in every one of the 8 cups of coffee I'm drinking?!? (Yeah - I finally measured how much was going in the cup).

I haven't made huge changes as a result of the Nutrition Tracker, but I'm certainly more aware. Sometimes I'll have oatmeal with raisins instead of a bagel. For the first time I cruised around the message boards looking for palatable substitutes for cream in my coffee. After 9 months, I finally set up a SparkPage (thanks to my sister for holding my hand during the process!).

And I have set a weight goal - one that takes me to a BMI for "normal" weight. I know getting there likely won't be as painless as it has been so far. But I have a great life and a great family, and I can't think of any better thing I could do for myself than invest in my health so I'll be around for a long time.

    Congratulations on losing twenty pounds!

    The nutrition tracker is a great tool, the best of it's type and it's FREE. I've learned a lot about my nutritional habits by logging my daily foods. And yes, awareness is key.

    I've come to realize that lifestyle changes are better made in small increments. This way the changes are more apt to be permanent.
