A "WILD" day - hippos galore, and eventually some ellies too...

Friday, July 17, 2009

Spent most of the day today sitting on my bum in the car! (I think I deserved a rest day after a hard week of training, anyway, so don't feel too bad, and I ate well too.)

We had a fantastic family outing to the Pilanesberg game reserve, and spent 5 and a half game viewing before heading back home to Pretoria. Despite the boys getting a bit whiny towards the end, everybody enjoyed the trip and being in the bush again.

We were very lucky - this is what we saw : giraffe, elephant ( oddly they were a bit elusive this time, but on our way out of the park we saw a mom with 2 young ones, as well as a lone bull), PLENTY of hippos (big and small, and not in the water, but sunning themselves and grazing, probably due to the cold weather), a baby crocodile, a monitor, white rhino, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, red hartebeest, a resting lion's ears (couldn't see the rest unfortunately - too many game viewing cars parked around this "highlight of the day"), waterbuck, warthog, and lots of great bird sightings, my best being a Fish Eagle at a water hole.

Wow!! I would love to have seen all those magnificent creatures. You are lucky to live there! I live in Boston, so the only wildlife I see is a very occasional skunk or groundhog.

How exciting, Sam! Sounds like you had fantastic family time and adventurous at that! WOW -- I would have loved to have been there -- we don't have too many elephants, etc., in Wisconsin emoticon I've heard we have a bear that some have said runs through my yard (I haven't seen him yet -- and I don't want to -- no surprises for me, please) and a few gentle deer that pass through as I have the woods directly behind my house, but it's great to hear about all the great animals you saw and in your words - my special friend at "Stressed Out Moms/Women Gettin' Healthy"!
