First 5k - Completed

I blogged last week that I would be running my first 5k on Saturday, so here is the followup....we had a great time!!!
It was pretty humid, but slightly overcast right before the race started. Just as we were about to start, the sun came out, and got pretty hot. Ok, not a great sign, but still manageable. The race started and we shot out at a really fast pace, way too fast for me to run at for the whole race. We kept up with the faster people for a while, then settled into a more comfortable pace, and managed a 7:30 first mile.
This is where the fun began...not long after passing the first mile marker, the hills started. Nothing too big, but I was only mentally prepared for a flat course. There were three sets of rolling hills, with one up and down being pretty steep. I hate hills...
The course was an "out and back" - not sure that's the technical term, but it's what I'm calling it. At the turn around there was water. This was my first ever attempt at drinking some water while running. I think I did it wrong because I felt worse after the water than before. We started heading over the hills again and decided to take a quick walk break. Did some walking, cheered on some of the other runners, and back at jogging again. We ran for a little longer and then decided to take another quick walk somewhere around 2.5 miles in. We got to the last stretch and went to finish strong.
We crossed the finish line at 28:35, right in the middle of the pack, with smiles on our faces. My smile was probably a little bigger than Beth's, as she has ran lots of races before. We didn't go fast, but going fast wasn't the point to me. I wanted to get out and have some fun with Beth! Mission accomplished...and I'll be back for more.
