Weight Loss is Hard, but it’s Worth it!

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

My dear sparkfriends, I’ve been reading threads and blogs, giving great thought to the many obstacles we face on this weight loss journey, this lifestyle change. A common question is why this is so hard? I often times read statements saying I’ve never been skinny or I want to be thinner; I hear that and I understand; but:

It's not really about being skinny, it's about being better, a better you. It's about the lifestyle change, doing what's best for our health and body so we can live a better quality of life. This is most important; you must be willing to do what it takes to put you in that place. It will not be easy, your body will be upset with you and it will rebel, but you must take control and decide what will happen. It can happen, it will happen, it's up to you!

My attitude has changed dramatically since my last commitment to this journey and joining the SparkPeople family. I come to realize that at 43 I’ve lived half of my life; I’ve not always been obese; but the last 10 years have not been what they could have been. This weighs heavy on my mind to the point that I realize that time past is time you cannot regain; 1 hour looking at TV is 1 hour gone; did I spend it the way I wanted to or could I have done something that would have improved my quality of life. This is important to me now, because I want better for myself and that’s the attitude I must take. How can I properly give love and care for others when I cannot do the things to take care of myself.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you are not to enjoy yourself and surf the net or watch a movie, which too is a part of living. What I am saying is this journey should not be a chore, something we dread doing because it’s difficult and yes carries disappointments. It should be an involuntary part of our lives like breathing. Why because, it will make us better, provide better health, perhaps prolong life and allows us to share our experiences with others. Honestly, I really can’t afford not to make this lifestyle change, by sticking with it, getting it done, I reap the benefits, this makes me a winner and with that, my loves ones become a winner because I will have a better quality of life. I wish that for all of you, but you have to want it for yourself.

Peace and Blessings

Beautiful statement of facts. Words escape me right now on how to even begin to thank you for such a motivational story. One that should be on the front page of this site.

I think most people tend to reflect on their lives when they in or reach the 40s. I also have had to reflect on my life and what I've learned about myself and certain habits were not 'pretty'.

I had to make some majorlifestyle changes in an effort to get and live a healthy life. It took a while, but I'm finally experiencing life again!

I have found what I love - running. And it is never a chore to run. Eating is a challenge, and I would gladly let someone else plan, prepare, and serve my food to me. But since I am not Oprah, I will just do it myself. As my friend ARTHUTOM says, if it was easy, everyone would be fit. I intend to be one of the few and proud and healthy ones!

Terrific blog, Julynn-- you are always so worth reading.

Losing weight is hard, but the alternative (not losing weight, feeling less than optimal every day): well, that's hard too.

It really does feel so good to feel good -- trite as that sounds -- and to like the way your body feels as it moves, and to like (even though this may sound like vanity) what you see in the mirror too!

This is a great support net work BECAUSE of extraordinary people like you! emoticon

A beautiful post--- you are very right, this should be about a lifestyle change, become like breathing to us. When we are just in the frame of mind of "getting skinny" and still hate working out or taking care of ourselves , we are not really living either. Thank you for the post and best of luck with everything.

I think that this year I have had success because of spark people and by having good friends that are encouraging. If it was not fun I could not still be doing this.
