Stupid flat tire

Friday, May 22, 2009

Between finals and moving cross-country for the summer, I haven't been online much. I have, however, been trying to get into a new fitness habit.

Since I no longer have access to the big gym on campus, I've been biking. My first trip ended badly with a flat tire - at least I was only a quarter-mile from my house, so I didn't have to take it all that far. I've been making good progress increasing my mileage over the course of four days- from 3.3 miles the first day to 8.4 today. The limiting factor today was actually my lower back, which was starting to feel tired.

This is such a huge improvement from last summer, when I kept trying to get into the biking habit - only to find that I was nauseated and miserable after half a mile. And those half-mile rides weren't enough to increase my cardio endurance, so they never got better. (I was also walking regularly, but that didn't seem to be enough to help with the biking either.)

Maybe this means that I'm no longer "trying to get in shape" and have moved on to "being in shape" (albeit with other goals I'd still like to meet).

I seem to recall you had tire troubles before, too. This makes me think that trying to bike (especially in my current neighborhood) might not work for me (other than the exercise bike in my basement, of course).

Good news on the improvement, though! I think you are probably right about the "in shape" part. I hope to join you there soon.
