1st 5K - sort of...

Saturday, May 09, 2009

I finally entered a 5K race. I've been wanting to for quite awhile and found one that wasn't too far away and didn't cost as much as a lot of them. ($15 instead of $20, and only $5 for kids under 18) Got signed up and turned up for the race this morning. Hadn't slept real well last night - had quite a T-storm pass thru, but it was over an hour before it was time to leave. Humid, but reasonably cool - great day for an outdoor run! Arrived, and the first thing I heard was - race was cancelled due to the T-storms. Hey - it was over and weather was great! But, no - it's - ok, not cancelled, but postponed until who knows just when... Talk about a bummer! On the positive side, there were some there who decided to run anyway. Ok, unofficial, but we went to the start line and took off all together. I ran it in 29:45. Didn't beat my goal of 30 min by much, and certainly didn't make the 28:00 I was wanting, but all things considered - not complaining. Hey - I did finish first in my age group! (and 2nd and 3rd...) Just a few more months and I can compete with the gal who finished first overall... she runs 5K's in 25 min! But then, she's been running for 7 years. I WAS told my form was good - nice to hear from someone who knows. I was also told I need to get a pair of real running shorts! Probably right about that. I just need to keep working on my speed and stamina so I can maintain my quicker pace for longer. Probably need to add a % incline to the treadmill as well. My neighborhood mile run doesn't have any hill - this one did a little. Not a huge hill, but noticeable. On the flip side, that meant there was also some downhill...
I do wish the organizers hadn't freaked about the weather. It's their 5th year doing it and the first time they've had rain or storms on Mother's Day weekend. I am glad there were several people who wanted to run anyway and that I got to run with them. From now on I will pack water in the car even if I expect to have some provided - that was an issue. Most of those who stayed to run hadn't brought anything either. Thankfully one lady did, and was very willing to share! Speaking of which, I need to go get another drink.

It's always a disappointment after getting the nerves going & then find you got nothing to spend the energy on. But U guys went on & did it anyway- good 4 U! I have to admit that U must have got there 'after' the worse of it? Cause from 3 AM It looked like I needed an Ark & the hail & lightning was awful. Really did some weird things with the internet, cell comm. & Dish Network for about 4 hrs. A lot of Memphis & surrounding areas were flooded & without power. So U lucked out & maybe they'll reschedule & U get a do over! emoticon
