How I arrived at Spark People

Friday, April 17, 2009

I have promised a team mate my story of my weight loss journey.

It isn't that interesting but I believe typical.

In high school, I was always thin, very thin and almost too thin. I just wouldn't eat at all. I learned that not eating would reward me with being thin. That works when you are a teenager but wasn't a good way to live. I did realize this and always believed that exercise was important. I would walk a lot and do some aerobics at home but nothing very serious.

When I was married, I expected to get pregnant right away. I was 30-years-old and eager for that family. It was not to be. As each month passed, I would console myself with a "treat" and slowly the pounds started in to increase. It wasn't anything major but the beginnings of the bad habits that I struggle with now.

Eight years later, I was blessed with my pregnancy! It was time to celebrate! emoticon emoticon and I certainly did...gaining over 50 lbs too!

I did lose all this weight due to being careful and nursing. BUT....went back to my old "not eating" habits when I returned to work and put Nason into day care at 13 months old.

This didn't work out for me and I quit my dream job (teaching) and stayed home with Nason. Now...there was nothing for me to do but eat.

I tried Weight Watchers online but it wasn't working for me. What I needed was friends to help me on this journey.

One day in January, I was looking at People.com and found before and after diet success stories. This one woman around my age had lost a lot of weight with Spark people and I decided to take a look. I was immediately hooked and now I am obsessed!

I am losing weight slowly but more importantly, the bad habits are being revealed and I am learning healthier ones. I will one day be at my goal weight but this time healthy and fit.

I will share that journey with all of you because I plan on staying here forever. What is nice about SP is that the journey is not over once you lose the weight...you can stay and help others along the way as well.

I am a SP addict and I have all of you to thank! emoticon

I am so happy you are part of SP. THank you for sharing your story with us. I, too, gave up my dream job of teaching to stay home with my kids. I, too, had a hard time getting pregnant - it took us 6 years to have our first child. I am glad we can share this journey together.
