Vacation or something close to it!! Carrizo Plain 2009

Monday, April 13, 2009

Well as co-leader of Camp Run-a-Muck, guess what I did on my mini vacation? Bingo - I went camping. Now I have my preferences for warm places, preferably tropical or near a beach, no rain, ability to get some exercise and hike, and a place I can take the dogs. Well I got most of them this trip:

For Easter weekend, my 4wheel-ed Fur-faced [not just the dogs..] family got the Montero packed up and we got on the road early Friday morning! 2Dogs, 1 wife, 1 4wheeled hubby - and away we go. As usual no trip is undertaken without some kind of drama. About 125miles into the 325mi trip the Check Engine Soon light came on. Out came the manual - of course pull over immediately [Don't Pass Go, Don't collect $200 - get towed right away] and check everything. I could find nothing wrong. Like I need 2 more gray hairs. Coin toss - our daughter would be waiting for us, we go for it!

As we get closer to Carrizo Plain, we get rained on - a sign of things to come?? Nope says #1hubby. [No I do not have #2 waiting in the wings] WRONG!! Men, I knew my back was in barometric sink with the weather. We arrive at Carrizo, and Amanda and Jace [daughter and boyfriend] and Apollo [small dog like animal] are waiting for us. It had been a while so we were MUCHO happy to see the kids and small furry one. Oh and where they glad to see us - did I mention we had their tent?? Sleeping Pads?? And most of the food?? Oh and the camp stove?? LOL

Bob {#1 hubby} did his tent duty thing and set up both tents. I unpacked the roof rack and all the furry ones got to know one and other better. Lunch and rain out of the way, it cleared for a bit. Manda, Jace, the furry ones and myself - took it upon ourselves to get in a little hike. I think I grew 3inches from the mud gathered underneath my hiking shoes. The glorious height was short-lived when we came back from the hike. It was raining again. Other members of our party had arrived and set up their camp. The temp was dropping, it was quick dinner [sandwiches] and off to huddle in our tents. Then the wind came - burrrr!

Sat. morning - no more rain - Yeah!! Fog, cold Fog! However, hot Chai and Peppermint Tea - does wonders. The dogs in their fur coats where happy as clams. We headed out to Caliente Ridge and did some hiking and wildflower picture taking. What a day! Later we headed out to Soda Lake to investigate the amount of rain that had fallen. Jace made salt angels, others hiked the boardwalk, and others just checked out the scenery! All in all a good day!

Back at camp the group rallied the firewood, we got the camp fire built and it was cooking time. Everything from Beef and grilled bread to Hot Dogs to Tandoori Chicken and Lime scented Squash. Guess which I was cooking?? Yup - the gourmet stuff. Also coal-roasted Asparagus - yummmmm! The kids grew strange and mysterious alien-like objects from marshmallows, and the adults took pictures and speculated if anyone would guess what they were. Name the Glob - I am sure is currently being passed around the Backpacker.com forums.

We ran a late night, turned in - and all sleep like the angels. The Easter Bunny in her camper disguise - made the rounds, to the welcome surprise of child and adult alike. Who says M&M's for breakfast isn't a good idea. We walked to greet the day, ate our breakfast, laughed, joked, talked and packed up camp. It was over, but what a weekend, and we will all do it again next year!! And maybe before??

As we parted ways and headed in our separate directions home, we reflected a good time had been had by all.

We chose to go back 58 to 101 and home the scenic way. We even explored some dirt roads, just because they were there. Once home, we unpacked, the dogs sacked out - barely acknowledging their dinner, and we 2 legged creatures toasted Easter w/ Subway turkey sandwiches. A pleasing end to a happy holiday weekend.

Hope everyone else had an equally wonderful time this weekend!!
