In need of inspiration

Sunday, April 12, 2009

The last month and a half has been a struggle for me, with challenges on several fronts. I've been at the office after hours many evenings and even a weekend, missed my workouts several times a week due to last minute job demands, experienced the joy of a new challenge and a job well done, only to watch it dissipate in the face of bizarre and mean-spirited office politics targeted at my boss, who is an exceptionally kind and fun person to work for. It's very sad and frustrating.

Meanwhile, on the home front, it has been 8 weeks since my husband was offered a job that was supposed to start as soon as he received a clearance that was only supposed to take 4-6 weeks. We are still waiting. My husband has also had to travel several times over the last few months to assist his father in accommodating his mother's desire to return home from a nursing facility, while still requiring 24 hour a day care.

The good stuff, such as it is. I still manage to exercise about every other day, and I have added some running, biking and weight training to my routine walking. I started a training program for beginning women runners this past week, which is sponsored by my local Road Runners Club. Yesterday we trained in pouring rain. Since February, I have been biking on weekends whenever the weather permits it. Last weekend, a friend and I covered 24 miles. Unfortunately, she is busy today, and I am still trying to find my "get up and go." It is sunny today, but a little bit chillier than I had hoped for. I'm sure I'll do something.

To all of my Sparkfriends: I thank you all for your encouragement and support, which have been so important to me, and I will try to get back to regular blogging.

THis is a frustrating and fearful time in our country. There are so many uncertainties. I pray things will work out soon for your husband.
You say you are looking for inspiration, yet you are a constant inspiration to me. I strive to overcome my back issues as you have. WHenever I feel discouraged I think of you.
THe nursing home/full time care situation is so hard to deal with. Knowing the best thing to do is so hard. Most people want to be in their own home, but when their care is too much for the family, what can be done? I hope that will resolve itself in a positive way for all.
Most days, I do not want to go to the gym. I start thinking about the back pain and making excuses. but in the end I get in the car and make the trip. Afterwards I am glad I did it. It is not fun, but I know it is helping my health. It was you who gave me the confidence to keep trying.
I also enjoy following your walking trip.
Know that you are an encouragement and support here on SP. DO not let all of the stuff, get in the way of your success. You are doing an amazing job!

I think everyone in this country is frustrated right now with a job situation. Employers know we are sitting ducks and we can't just jump from one job to the next! My husband experienced the very same thing with his job last year. It was beyond stressful.

I hate you are dealing with the nursing home thing. We kept my grandmother at home with round the clock care and it was good for her, but hell for the finances, which are still a nightmare. I wish I had advice in that area.

Hang in there and keep up with the exercise. It does wonders for stress and helps you deal with the rest of the crap going on!

That crazy computer put my comment on three times. I was wondering why it was taking so long. I edited the last two. Anyway, I guess you know I was here, right.

Janet, so sorry your month isn't going well. Please just hang in there. Things will start looking up for you. That's a promise. It's great that you started a beginners program. Just goes to show you how special you are.

I also hit some roadblocks, but am on the upside.

Just keep plugging along for now.

You've got a lot of stress, but I'm so glad to see your positives there, too. You are managing to fit in a lot of workouts, which help you body, mind, and soul. Congratulations on joining the running club - there is no high like a runner's high!
