"Luck wins the lottery, work loses the weight"

Saturday, February 07, 2009

I have an incredibly large extended family, and we are closer than you would ever believe. When we were growing up, our families all lived within a block of each other, our parents all worked at the family dry cleaning business, we all went to the same Catholic school right down the street from the family business, and when we got out of school, they'd send a car to pick us up and bring us home to one of my aunt's houses where my grandmother (Sittoo, for anyone who knows any Lebanese people) waited for us, gave us a snack and then sat us all down around the table to do our homework. Year after year after year. The cleaners is long gone, and many of our parents are gone, but we are still close. My first cousin's children are my niece's and nephews, many of those children have grown and have children of their own.. Second and third cousins know each other intimately. When one of our children has a birthday, the whole family is invited (that's now about 60 people). We celebrate every Christmas together, and every member of every family makes it a point to get to that celebration and spend at least some time. We rotate Christmas's between the 5 original families that were my Sittoo's kids, so each original family only hosts every 5th year.

What the HELL does this have to do with this blog topic??? It's about the work. I can't tell you the number of people who see us "in action" who say, "boy, you don't know how lucky you are!" Boy, I'll be the first person to agree we are very lucky to have each other and to be as close as we are. But we are not close because we are lucky, we are close because WE WORK AT IT. How many crazy people have 60 person birthday parties for their 4, 5, 6 year old children? Who wants to host 60 people at their house, ever?? We're on top of each other, it's crazy, and it's lots of work. But it keeps us together, and not a single one of us would ever dream of being the person who doesn't do it. But truly, it is more than that, we do it because we really, genuinely, do like and love each other.

So it is with this journey. It is hard work, but we do it both out of a sense of duty to ourselves, and because we LIKE the results. Oh, we might feel, and actually be, lucky that our bodies can actually get up and do that exercise, that we didn't wait until something really bad happened to us to give us that wake up call to healthy living. And there might be some luck involved in finding the right thing for you, like when I found out that the morning exercise thing was going to work for me and suddenly it all fell into place. But it was only my continuously working to find the right thing that created that lucky, fateful day..and I thank the good Lord every day that I am in the groove I'm in.

Hard work...baby steps...truly, one moment at a time..let's go baby!!

You are so correct, everything that is worth having is worth working hard to achieve and maintain.

    Amen, Tina!

I envy you your large family... but not the work actually... I'll bet there are a lot of people who feel the same about losing weight... they envy healthy svelte people, but they avoid the WORK! Thanks for the example!

What can I say, Tina... you 'blow me away' with your energy- your ZEST for life- you're just what I need to SMILE everyday! That's all it takes, is a thought of you, and 'ta-da' I'm grinning like the Cheshire Cat! LOL!

I would LOVE an enormous fabulous family and have always dreamed of one for me- probably has something to do with 6 children (though I wanted a dozen) but... WOW, what an fantastical blog... and just inconceivable trying to imagine 60 people at a child's Birthday party!! I've heard of gargantuan families... (sigh) it would be a lot work, but being born into it would have its advantages... being 'trained up' in it you see?
Well, my DEAR friend... I need to scuttle (LOL!!) off- meaning... short hurried movements (LOL!!) such as SCURRY!! heehee!!

I STILL need to go put my goals in our Leprechauns!!
    This'll be GR8!!
    Luv' ya'
Annie emoticon I know you were planning on some red wine tonight but... heck, why not a little GREEN beer?!!
