I did it!!! I ran the entire thing!!

So, I did and I ran the entire thing. I was so incredibly proud of myself and I had a blast. I wasn't expecting this to be nearly as fun as it was. Here's my whole story.

We drove from my parents house in Missouri all the way down to San Antonio on the Thursday before. Friday and Saturday we saw some friends, did some shopping and just hung out a lot. Saturday evening my stomach was tied up in knots because I was so nervous. Then, I was getting all of my stuff together and I took my Garmin off of the charger and it didn't beep at me. I looked at it and started playing with it....it was completely frozen! I freaked out. I know that it shouldn't be, but my Garmin is like my security blanket. I don't feel like I can run without it. So I went running downstairs and showed my DH. He told me to go ahead and take a shower and pack the rest of my stuff and he would work on it. When I got out of the shower I could hear the beeping. He had completely reset it. My hero!!

The next morning we left the house at 5:45 because I wanted to be at the start line at 6:30, an hour before the start. We were tooling right along and then just stopped completely on the interstate. The people in the car in front of us just got out and went down the bank. We were where we needed to be, but we couldn't get moving enough to get to the exit. So, I got out and went down the hill also. Walking to the start line I met a group of new friends. They were in my corral and we just started chatting immediately. They definitely kept me company and I know kept me calm. One of their friends had dropped them off and then was taking the shuttle, which was caught in traffic. Their friend made a friend and I ended up running with her until mile 10.

So, we started the race, me and 4 of my new friends. Immediately 2 of them fell back a little and the other 2 and me went ahead. After about a mile one of the other ones went on ahead of us. So it was me and 1 other girl. She had never run more than a 10k before this race so I didn't think that we would probably finish together. I don't usually run with other people, but it was nice to have someone to talk to. The start was really cold, but it turned out to be a beautiful day and it was nice to have someone there so that you could keep going and take clothes off.

I was watching for my DH, best friend and mom from the moment we started. I saw them at mile 2, 8 and 10. They had signs and were great. My husband had on a bight red Nebraska sweatshirt and so he was pretty easy to pick out of the crowd. At mile 8 I saw them way before they saw me. They were also at the finish, but there were too many people that I didn't see them at all.

I was doing great running until I got to mile 12. I hit a huge brick wall. I felt like I could do anything up until that point. At about 12.6 or 12.7 there was a guy next to the street yelling "around the corner and up the hill and you're done." All I could think was hill?? You've got to be kidding me! I started running in step with another lady then and she talked me up the hill. It wasn't very long, but it was really steep. Who does that to someone who has been running for that long. If it wasn't for that lady I don't know if I would have made it running up that hill, but I like that think that I would have.

Yes, there were some issues, but overall I was having such a good time that they didn't really bother me. I loved all of it and I am so ready to do it again. There is one in Lincoln in May that I really want to do. We'll see how it goes!

Yeah, race directors have a warped sense of humor putting hills at the end of a race. Congratulations on finishing!

A hill at the end is a cruel way to end a race, but you made it, congrats

Great job!!! There is a half I always run in February and the traffic gets backed up down the highway as well. VERY stressful! Good thing you had your hubby to deal with the car!

Glad it was an awesome experience!
