Late Afternoon Munchies

Monday, November 03, 2008

For as long as I can remember, a late-afternoon snack has been part of my regular routine. I've just begun to notice though that I do it more out of habit than real need. As a kid, I can remember always having a large snack when I got home from school. Sometimes it was a plate of cookies and a glass of milk. Other times it was the previous night's leftover chicken. It was always substantial.

Lately when 4:00 strikes, I've been trying to limit myself to a piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, or some trisquits. After this snack, I have lately begun to notice that I am no longer hungry but still I am searching the fridge and cupboards for that extra oomph that will satisy my CRAVING. I often cave in to a few pieces of cheese and that does it. I'm fine until dinner.

It's funny how these childhood habits stay with us.

I've found that I need that afternoon snack at about 3, or else when I get home from work around 4:30, I'll stuff my face, and THEN make dinner too.
So I've started taking enough to work for the following:
Breakfast - I often eat peanut butter on bread in the car on the drive to work, and then a yogurt once I get there.
Mid-morning snack: An apple or yogurt is great at about 9.
Lunch: I'm trying to combat my need for sweets following a meal, so I have been taking yogurt (notice a theme?) or a pre-portioned low-cal cookie. It keeps me away from the machine.
Afternoon break: Anything from yogurt to fruit to pre-portioned crackers. Maybe even a string cheese now that I see Sargento Light String Cheese is just 50 calories each.

I didn't have that childhood snack (I was anorexic) but as I have gotten older, I find that I need more protein and fiber in my diet to keep me from craving something to snack on. Like you, a piece of cheese often does the trick!

Thanks for sharing this blog! Good point!

Try having a big glass of icewater with your snack, or some veggies. I too get hungry in the late afternoon and usually have popcorn, or some other filling snack that will get me to dinner.
