The scale - friend, foe or something in between?
As with most things in life the use of the scale requires moderation, yes it can indicate progress or lack thereof regarding weight. Yes it can tell you if you need to be more diligent regarding calories or exercise. But does it tell you the whole story?
NO - I'm a firm believer it doesn't! You can be a flabby size 8 at 120 lbs or a lean mean 140 lbs wearing a size 4 why, because muscle takes up less space than fat. Remember the more information you have at your disposal, the better choices you can make regarding the direction you wish to take.
Measurements/body fat% -Building muscle. Muscle is a little compact calorie burning machine so the more you have the more calories you burn a day, even at rest. I read somewhere once that a woman's body is incredibly good at stabilizing after a cardio routine (the calorie burn even one hour after is not as great as a mans is), but will continue to burn calories after doing a strength training session, interesting thought.
Or by just plain old feeling better, are you breathing easier climbing the stairs, can you run, jump and play with your children, can your family take hikes, bike, ski, rollerblade or do some other activity together....well this is progress.
Are you becoming heart healthy? Are your cholesterol levels or blood pressure dropping. What possibly could be a better measurement of progress towards a healthy lifestyle!
Remember, progress can be measured in more ways than one!
