My first 13.1 miles

Thursday, October 23, 2008

Well I did it. On Sunday October 19, 2008 I ran (okay jogged) my first half marathon.
The weather was freezing . 32 degrees to be exact at the start and unfortunately not much better at the finish line. I had never run in the cold as I much prefer to run inside on the treadmill.
Ipod players are prohibited even though I saw several people wearing them. I ALWAYS wear my ipod when I run so this made it a little harder as I didn't have my favorite songs pushing me on.
I had a smaller race the week before in Florida while I was on vacation and with the heat and humidity, my poor feet suffered several blisters.
With all of this being said, I still did it!!!
My time was not great. I finished in 2:26:57 which is a pace of 11:14/mile. But I am still very proud of myself. I just started running again this spring and even though I had tried running in the past (about 10 years ago), I was never serious about it. My running first started as a way to help me in my weight loss journey. I figured I could burn more calories running on the treadmill verses walking. emoticon I slowly built up my endurance and attempted my first 5K in June and I loved it. There is almost no greater feeing than when you cross that finish line. I ran two other 5K's (improving my time with each race) before I attempted an 8K in September. My final race before the 1/2 marathon was a 15K earlier this month (this was my nemesis race with the blistering as mentioned above).
I would have NEVER thought I would be running races. I am still one of those people that think I am dying in the first mile..... well I guess I am stronger than I ever thought possible. Who knows maybe I will try the full marathon next year.

    Congratulations on finishing the half-marathon!!

I ran also, and it was my first race ever. I had no idea it could be so much fun! With all the people and excitement, it went by fast.

Have you seen your photos from the Marathon Photo site?
