50K trail race - 23 Aug 08

Well, the 50K went pretty good considering the high temps and I just ran a 101.2 miler three weeks ago. The race started at 8:30 and I was behind 5 runners for the first few miles. I felt good then so I took the lead and held it for a good hour. Then a guy passed me and I held 2nd for an hour. Then a lady passed me and she eventually won out right.
The trails were tough. Lots of hills and lots of exposure to the sun also. The worst was around mile 15 on a bike path and then road for maybe 3 miles. The sun took it's toll on everyone. Lots of complaints of cramping. Once off the road we ran another brutal trail and then came back on that same road and bike path which was even hotter. Once back on the trails I started to have right calf cramping - ever time I ran the flat sections. Weird. I had to stop a few times to massage it and stretch. Another guy passed me at this time so I was fourth. No wait, another lady and guy had passed me awhile back so I was 6th. The guy who passed me first I passed him at an aide station as he was having calf cramping problems. So now I was fifth. I so wanted to be in the top 5 guys as they had awesome awards. (Awards for top 5 males and top 5 females)
When I went through the last aide station with 3.2 miles to go I was told I was the four guy. Fourth? I had thought I was third guy. Hmmm...maybe aide station volunteer was wrong. Anyway, whatever it was I was determined to not let anyone else pass me. Still having the cramping issues and had to massage a couple of more times.
Disaster!! I suddenly realized I had not run here before (we had run this portion already) and nothing looked familiar and no flags. So I stopped and retraced my steeps to the TOP (had gone down a steep hill which didn't help at all) and when I got to the top sure enough I had missed a turn. I'm hard on myself so I said, "You dumb ass!!"
Still I thought I was still in the same position before getting lost and then I looked behind me and there was the first guy that had passed me after I had taken the lead. So for the last mile I ran it and he did not catch me! So there!
However, while I was trying to figure out what I missed at the bottom of the hill on the wrong trail I think three or four people passed me. One lady and at least two guys. I was so pissed at myself for missing that very obvious trail marking. What was I thinking? It was just stupid.
During the race I felt like nothing that I drank was doing me any good and it was all in my stomach. Sure didn't want to eat anything and only had one piece of pizza at the end which is highly unusual for me. :)
I sat around for an hour after and talked to all the other racers and everyone's time was slower and cramps abounded. Everyone seemed to have a hard time with the heat, and I guess that is why we like to test ourselves all the time. Gives us stories to tell, right?
