Think about SparkSchools?

I really enjoy SparkPeople and I tell anyone who asks me how I lost weight this summer that I found a great site. If they have time, I show them my Start Page and go through some of the great features. I’m a high school librarian, so I see a lot of teachers. I’ve made it a point to show the site to our health teacher and our PE teachers. They all like it and they ask how high school students could best use SparkPeople.

I would like to see a SparkSchool section that would have things in it about health and fitness especially for high school students. Most (but sadly not all) of our students don’t need to lose weight, but they all would benefit from other excellent features like the exercise and video workouts and the health articles. The food and fitness trackers would be really useful, too. It would need to be something that teachers could show students quickly and that students could sign up for easily. Teenager discussion groups could be different from those for adults—things that would interest teenagers and geared toward a lifetime of health. There could be a teachers’ forum, and it would be great to include lesson plans that would use the best features of SparkSchool.

I enjoy SparkPeople and wish I had found it sooner. It would be great for our young people to enter adulthood already familiar with SparkPeople and ready for a long and healthy life.

What a great idea! I'm glad to see there's already a place for the teens.

I sooooooo know what you mean! I've been sharing with my teammates about SparkPeople!!! I said something to my hubby about even a 'kiddy site'...for those late elementary and middle school kiddos to track EXERCISE...not necessarily have them count calories, but something to promote exercise and good snacking and eating habits. I thought I'd seen a banner about kiddos when I logged in one day, but didn't get a chance to go back to it.

Anyway, I'm now a week and a half in to my school year and LOVE IT!!!!!! I moved down to sixth grade this year and left language arts (which I've taught for the last 11 years) for math. I'm having a BLAST! The sixlets are soooooooo cute and funny!!! I don't know why I thought they were goofy and a little annoying when I taught 8th grade (my students' attitudes must've been rubbing off on me at the time--LOL). I was worried about going back down to 6th grade (started my career in 6th grade language arts and was in that position for 5 years), but I LOVE IT!!!!!

Good luck as you start your year and bid summer a farewell!

You are absolutely right! I didn't know about it, and I appreciate your pointing it out. It looks like what our weight training teacher had in mind when we talked about it. He really loved the exercise demonstrations but thought that students would be overwhelmed by the adult site.

What I had in mind would be something for teens, like this, with ways for classes to interact with the teacher, or ways that the teacher could assign things from the site that would be appropriate for the student or for classes. Maybe there could be class challenges. Even if the teacher could say, "There is a nice article on nutrition for teens. If you read it and write a response to it, you can get extra credit." or, "Go to SparkTeens and find an article about nutrition for teens and report on it next class." It would be nice for the teacher to know what sorts of things the teens can do with the site so he/she could facilitate its use. I don't know if I'm making my point very well.

Thanks again for pointing out SparkTeens!

There IS a site - It's called Sparkteens. Check it out, but they protect the teens and you have to be a teenager - unless they've modified it. I checked it out this spring.
I've had at least one student sign up for sparkpeople.
