On the Farm

Tuesday is pick-up day at our local CSA (community supported agriculture, like a co-op). The owner has over 100 acres of open fields alongside a river. There is abundant wildlife and extremely fertile ground as the fields usually flood in both spring and fall. The owner is very generous with his property. I can go there anytime and let the dog run free. My kids bring out soccer balls, kites, frisbees, rockets, etc. Because I volunteer so many hours, the owner lets me take 'whatever I want' in terms of produce, although I am careful not to take an unfair amount when we have limited quantities. I have been active in the CSA for 5 years now and I am continually amazed at how wrapped up my whole being is in the life of the land. I learn something new every day I am out there ... and sometimes I learn the most about myself. For me, the farm is a place of reconnecting with the land and spiritual renewal. For today, I should be able to collect an abundance of herbs, berries, cukes, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, corn, radishes, beans, lettuce, brocolli, kale, and eggplant!
