The Importance of Folic Acid

Folic Acid is an essential nutrient. I am on a mission to inform every young woman of childbearing age of its importance. Folic Acid deficiencies have been linked to an increased incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs) in the offspring of deficient women. NTDs include spina bifida, anencephaly (no brain) and all degrees in between. If you are interested in more, a simple google search can provide more in depth information and descriptions of the above mentioned defects. I have taken care of infants with these disorders and know first hand of the devastation. I used to work in a Neonatal ICU before returning to work as a labor and delivery nurse. A good multivitamin should include at least 400 mcg of folic acid. Just check the label on your MVI to be sure! Please pass along this information if you happen upon my little blog. Thanks, Merideth
