I rocked the Flat 5's face off!!!

Sunday, August 03, 2008

So I ran my 2nd race ever this morning (first was a 5K back in April... I'd love to run more b/c I LOVE race day atmosphere, but I just can't justify dropping $20 every other weekend for a T-shirt ;-)). It was a 5 mile race on a mostly flat course. I'm a slower runner, so I told myself going into it that I'd be really happy with anything under 55 minutes (that'd mean I averaged an 11 min. mile)... that I'd be okay with getting between 55 minutes and 60 minutes and that over 60 minutes was NOT allowed! Well... I ran it in... (drumroll please)

50:03!!!!! emoticon

I killed it!!! I just wished I'd known I was so close to beating the 50 minute mark. I would've pushed just a bit harder (if I could have). I was dying around the 3.5/4 mile mark... but somewhere right after 4 miles I caught a glimpse of the back of my husband (who agreed to run the race with me though he doesn't train so much as he randomly runs a couple miles every week or so). I couldn't believe it! He's 6 ft. tall (I'm 5'3", which mean SHORT legs), and he's always been more athletic than me (case in point: it took me 4 months to complete the couch to 5k program and to be able to run 3 miles straight... he woke up one morning while I was in the middle of the program and ran the 3 miles on a whim)... but I caught up to him!!! He finished right before me (3 seconds before me according to official time... if only I could've gotten my chip swiped by the first person!!). I was amazed and SO proud of myself!!
If you'd have told me back in November when I started running with C25K that 9 months later I'd run 5 miles at a 10 min/mi pace I'd have said you were crazy! If you'd have told me I'd finish a race right behind my husband, I'd have said you were nuts! What a great feeling this is!!! Next race on my schedule is a 10K in November. Hubby says he probably won't do that one, the 5 miles was hard enough on him (plus he says I'd most likely actually beat him at that distance and he can't have that! emoticon ). Just thought I'd share my happy happy joy joy with everyone at SP!

I've discovered I love the 5 mile/10k distances because my legs get an opportunity to warm up (much like in a tri!) so I perform better overall.

    Great work!

Did you know sometimes (most!) race entry fees are tax deductible? Just something to think about.

Woo FREAKIN Hoo! You rock. I love stories like this. I hope my first 5 mile race goes as well. Damn if only you'd beaten your dh. He'd never be able to show his face to his friends again!

Wonderful accomplishment! You should be very proud of yourself. I don't think I'll ever get beyond walking, and I'm averaging 2 miles a day now. Who knows? You're motivating me to try for more!

    Blessings, Mel
