Flipping through the channels tonight I found American Chopper (the show that used to be really popular where they build custom motorcycles), and I started thinking about how cool it would be to do something like that. You take these ideas and turn them into actual machines that people can touch and feel. I started realizing it's not that much different from adding features to SparkPeople. Someone will come up with a concept, then we'll work through the idea until we have it right, and finally we'll build it. Conceptually, the process is pretty similar to building motorcycles, but for some reason people I talk to have a hard time "getting" what it means to write software, but almost everyone gets building a machine. I guess in the end, more complicated software usually doesn't look more flashy than less complicated software, so it's hard to appreciate all of the thought and planning that is involved in it.
