My purpose

Monday, May 05, 2008

I have really struggled in prayer over trying to put into words what my purpose is. I guess I thought I had to have a fancy answer for people when they asked what I would be doing in Malawi. It reminds me a bit of the 17 years that I was a stay-at-home mom and everyone asks 'what do you do all day', like I didn't do anything. In my mind, I thought that if I didn't seem to have a grand purpose then people wouldn't support us on the mission field.

About 10 years ago I did a Bible study that had you fast and pray and set life goals. The challenge then is that each year you set yearly goals that help you to meet the life goals. (From that I also chose a life verse that is posted with my signature with each posting). I came up with 6 life goals: [1] To be a woman of prayer [2] To be a godly wife for Mike [3]To be a godly mother to my children [4] To be 'me' as God made me, to crucify self so that He can be more [5] To serve with Mike as a team, united in Christ [6] To take care of the body that God gave me ... the in 2006 I added [7] To be a godly grandma.

God recently showed me that these are still 'my purpose'. They may be in a different capacity, but God-given and directed non the less. So, after this revelation, and intertwining it with my spiritual gifts and passions, the mission statement was written. I am so grateful. Here it is:

My purpose is to be a woman of prayer, to encourage others in Jesus and to use my organizational skills to enable His ministry to run efficiently and effectively for His glory. I desire to express my heart for the Lord by ministering to women, by praying daily for others and structuring our home, calendars, finances, and correspondence in such a way that is pleasing to Him. I have set three goals for the coming year. First, create a database of supporters and implement a system to stay in contact with each of them. Second, to raise the funds needed to meet our annual budget as well as a start up budget. Third, to move to Malawi to set up home and ministry as He directs.

Mike wrote his mission statement as well...it is as follows: My purpose as a Christian agronomist is to express my knowledge of agriculture to people in need while sowing and cultivating seeds of the Gospel as an agricultural missionary. To be able to fulfill my purpose, I need to pray together with Michelle regularly, take the steps needed for this career change and continue to coach my children well.

Ahhh...God is good, all the time. Even in my struggle. I am thankful for His patience. And that it is okay to just be...me

Thanks for sharing this. It has been a long time since I worked through something like this. I am where I am because God called my husband. My place is with him, helping him in what God called him to do. I asked the Lord for a verse that would keep me going when the going was tough and He gave me 2Cor. 5:15. "And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again." My life is not about me. It's about the one who died for me!
