What color am I?

Sunday, April 06, 2008

My child had to write a paper on what her race is. Now I have worked very hard to teach my children that color (or race) does not matter. We are a very mixed family, the father of my two oldest children is Spanish, I'm a variety of things and my now husband is Irish and English. My youngest daughter did not know what to call herself. She said to me, "Mommy, I'm not white, this paper is white. And Lawan, (my oldest daughter's boyfriend of almost two years) is not black, he's chocolate." She's always called him that. It took her all week to write that paper. I am so proud of the final paragraph she wrote after describing her various family and friends of which are of many different races.
She wrote, " I am nothing, I am blank. I am not defined by my race. I am defined by who I am and what I will become, and that has nothing to do with what color I am."
Not bad for a 12 year old. If only the adults of this world would see things the same way.

Good job raising your daughter on knowing her heritage! She knows not to be boxed in by people's perceptions. Good for her!

Don't you wish there were more people who understood the world as well as you have taught this young woman. I am glad she got the assignment and I am happy to share her quote.

That is very awesome especially for a 12 year old. Race, Creed, Color is hard to describe nowadays because there are not anymore clear cut guidelines. Even the census bureau has changed the way they ask the question! Are color and race the same thing? I always thought that race meant what area you were from like Asia, Europe, Africa?
