Calories Burned :o( New HRM!

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

I finally got my new heart rate monitor!! (Polar f4) I have been so excited to use it..haha...I always knew that I should take the calorie readouts that the machines give you with a grain of salt..but wow - some were sooo off!!

First I did the Precor stationary bike. I usually do the 'cross country' setting that varies the intensity like you are climbing hills. I did it for 30 min...it has you put your weight and age into it, so I *hoped* that it was fairly accurate...deep down I knew that it wasnt, and luckily when I would record my fitness goals here on spark I went with the calories spark says I burned..and not the bike...the bike said that i burn over 400 CAL!!...Spark says I burn about 240...and thats EXACTLY what my heart rate monitor says...I cant believe how off the machine is! Good thing I never trusted it...

Then I went on to the stair climber - it said that I burned 258 cal & my monitor said 254...pretty darn close! haha...Spark always underestimated that one by about 25% I thought..so I usually put in that I did it for 45 min instead of the 30 I actually did. (I was also kinda impressed at my own ability to guesstimate my calories burned....I usually just relate it to how I feel after running a mile...if running one mile = 100 cal burned, I would judge my exertion off how I feel after running and use that to estimate calories burned - no too scientific, but proving to be pretty accurate! haha)

I wanted to test my heart rate monitor out some more...but I was getting hungry/tired so I did the row machine for 15 min to cool down - burned 50 cal, but machine said 120...I have no idea how it comes up with that readout because it doesnt ask for age/weight/anything...so I knew that was prolly poo

I cant wait to try it out on some more!! haha...Im really curious about the readout for Turbo Jam!!
