Yesterday my husband and I went on a date. It was our Valentine's Day celebration even if it was a week late. He's on a permanent night shift and works every single weekend so it's hard to find the time and a babysitter on a week day. We left the munchkin with my mother in law, who had the day off work, and decided to go out for lunch and then to a movie.
Eating out always causes me anxiety. I know it's okay to indulge every once in a while, but it's hard to eat out and not go totally overboard. We were going to East Side Mario's one of my absolute favourite restaurants. Before we were married we used to go there about once a week and some weeks I might go on another night with a friend as well. The salad and bread are unlimited and the food is deliciously sinful. Well, planning is key so I decided to look over the menu online to try and find something healthy to choose. I was happy to discover that there is finally nutritional info available for the first time ever. When I started looking over the info I was absolutely shocked. Food choices that I thought were healthy options were actually some of the worst options. I was going to get the meal size garden salad and was shocked that it had almost 500 calories and 42 grams of fat. Crazy!
Just out of curiosity I tallied up the calorie count for my favourite meal that I used to get every single time and ignorance really is bliss sometimes. For a bowl of linguine tettrazine, garden salad and bread it's basically a days worth of food, 1,480 calories, 62 g fat, 173 g carbs, and 3,110 mg sodium. Yikes!
I was able to enjoy a guilt free 2 slices of gourmet vegetarian pizza which was delicious. I had a piece and a bit of garlic bread as well and I was content. So, with a little bit of planning eating out doesn't have to be an anxiety provoking experience for me anymore. I had a great time and it felt great to take a break from the ordinary.
Oh, and if you're thinking of watching the movie "Cloverfield" , don't bother, it was really stupid.
