For my 43rd birthday I cycled 101 miles!

Ran my 3 miles in 35:13 and did a 80 mile bike ride the weekend before in 6 hours. My spark streak is now 6 months for cardio.

Soon my "sparkstreak" for getting 90 minutes of cardio a week in will make the "half a year mark" so it seems like a good time to update this.
Change is possible! Running a mile seemed like a monster goal, and now I can run 2 miles in under 24 minutes. (Just please let it be cold, misty, and on the padded track. I have learned I can do it warmer or on city streets it just won't rock, it will slog.). I am looking forward to my first 5k and to see how fast I will run those 3.1 miles. My expectation will be that it's under 36 minutes, but if it's hot or congested I will let go of that.
When I finish the "couch to 5k" program for the ipod touch I am moving right into the "bridge to 10k".

In my previous intro, a 30 mile bike ride seemed like a long shot. That is my normal weekly ride now (40 is more like a "longish weekly"). My longest ride is currently 5:44 for 66 miles at the Cinderella Classic. It had a LOT more hills than I was expecting and a big storm was whipping up viscous crosswinds.

I find my long bike rides (3 hours) with the club really shred the calories and I love riding my bike. Running... it's more like a demented obsession. I suspect it helps the cycling, but mostly I am a junkie for the elation of the accomplishment. Each run seems like a miracle.

I have lost 20 pounds, and seem to have hit a plateau. Not enough calories to fuel my activity level? Or too many "swim meet days" where I gave up trying to track my food? I am so happy with my athletic accomplishments, and focused on those goals, that I am finding the plateau just "vaguely annoying". The tape measure seems to think my body is getting smaller around my waistline, and more leg muscles so I am trying to be mellow about that issue.

I signed up for this over a year ago, and it has been a great place to keep coming back to. I made my first goal for the summer of 2009 and could wear my shorts at the beach.
Then I ate WAY too much on vacation! At least I was working out a bit in the fall, but December 2009 wasn't great for food either. I nearly backslid into starting over entirely :(
2010 has been MUCH better. I have learned that tracking my food and regularly moving up the duration and intensity of my workouts have made a HUGE difference. I am really motivated by results, and feeling athletic. I don't think I have been this fit (cardio wise) in 25 years. Run a mile? Bike 30 miles? yes I can!

Feb' 2009
I am hoping this will be a place to "get back in the routine" for when I get bumped off track. I find I get in a groove with working out and eating right but after a while, something happens (bad cold, schedule change) and I don't stop, refocus and figure out how to MAKE IT WORK.

I hope I inspire some of my friends and family to take better care of their health as well!

Watching "The biggest looser: couples" has been inspirational and given me a lot of insights. I was amazed they could run 13 miles after just 12 weeks. WOW. I would be thrilled to run 1 mile in 12 weeks!
My feet hate me for that goal.

My first "milepost" is going to the beach on June 27th (2009). In 11 weeks I want my shorts to fit nicely, and my goal is to loose 2lbs a week to that date.
Then the summer heat is coming and I will have the challenge of my daughter's summer break. Staying moving will be a challenge!

Also, I want to get back into running before the big heat wave starts.

SparkPeople went a bit nutso with with groups, I will have to prune them at some point.

I feel risky posting my weight like that, but if the biggest looser people can do those weigh ins, then I can handle this level of accountability.

My Goals:
Loosing a lot of weight, getting strong, and being able to run. A mile seems like a big goal.
I dream of climbing half dome -or at least the 9 mile hike to the base. I have read up on the cables and I am not sure with my fear of heights if that part would be wise.

My Program:
I run M-W-F doing a couch to 5k and then bridging to 10k. See my blog for where I am at.
I like to bike 3x a week, but often it's just the Thursday ride, no weekend, no Tuesday :(

ipod touch loaded with great tunes and the Alex Stankovic "Couch to 5 k program" (http://c25kapp.com/) with intervals. Love it so much I have already purchased the "bridge to 10k" app. The only earphones that stay in are the green Sennheiser Twist-To-Fit earphones (Amazon.com)

I also adore the Forerunner 305 I won, as I don't have to calculate my pace with a sharpie on the back of my hand (tick off laps) and stopwatch. Yes, it has a heart rate monitor but I don't look at that until I am done (or I worry). Love how it tells me how many calories grinding up a hill is torching.

I run in ASICS foundations (love!) on the lovely padded high school track.

Girls, I really must recommend the Saucony sports bra (forget what the name of the high impact one is.) and ExOfficio Give-N-Go sweat wicking panties. Get thee to Marshalls (or REI) and invest in sweat wicking gear!

    I read how you want to run to get fit. I use to be a runner but that

    changed when I had back surgery. Now I live with the after effects

    numbness in my foot but I never tried again. Your willing to start

    over in your training for a 5k so I have decided to give running

    another shot. Thanks for the encouragement.

    If using the Nike+ sensor with your iPod is something that interests you, you don't need to use Nike running shoes. You can buy a little pouch for the sensor that goes on your shoelaces, just as accurate and you're not limited to Nike's shoes. This is the one that I bought:
