I have always been fairly thin most of my life, however, after coming back from Iraq, I decided that I could eat whatever and whenever I wanted. It wasn't like we could eat like that during the beginning of the war. We ate what we were given. I managed to keep the weight down to a reasonable level simply because the Army requires daily physical fitness.

After I got out of the Army, I ballooned to a hefty 185 (weighed in with the doctor's just before a major surgery in 2006). My husband was already deployed to Iraq at this time.

When you are fixing meals for just one person, it's an easy choice just to go out to eat fast food or go out with girlfriends. I managed to stay strong and not indulge in eating out and in a few months time, I had lost nearly 20 pounds. After I realized that just cutting the fast food out of my diet would actually help me keep the weight off, I decided to actually TRY to lose weight. I started going to the gym three days a week. I spent the majority of the time on the treadmill for an hour and in May of 2006, I was down to a much healthier weight of 150. By December, I was down to a slender 140 and in the coming year, I managed to keep my weight in the 140-150 range.

But we'd moved twice and about to make another move. I stopped exercising altogether, and eating and drinking alcohol became a way of maintaining my moods in the face of extreme isolation. In 14 months, I had gained most of the weight that I'd lost in 2006 simply because I was too lazy to get out of the house to exercise or fix healthy meals for my husband and I.

A few weeks ago, I realized that none of my summer clothes fit me anymore and NONE of my nice clothes fit. So, my wonderful DH took me shopping for clothes. I knew I'd gained some weight, but I was not prepared to go up three sizes. This revelation brought tears to my eyes and decided that I needed to re-evaluate my lifestyle and habits.

I do want to lose the weight, but more importantly, I want to be healthier. Weight loss is never easy and this space is for me to chronicle my daily efforts!

I have started a lower calorie diet and I am also working out, in addition to walking my dogs daily.

I hail from Denver, Colorado, but I'm currently living in Germany. My husband is an active Duty Army Officer. I am currently an Army Volunteer and stay-at-home wife.


Other Information:
I'm a homebody, for the most part. I love my husband, my family and my country!
