I'm a lifetime dieter. I started as a kid with my mom, even though I wasn't overweight. Weird, huh?

I grew up with a fairly normal weight, then at the age of 32 as a result of depression, blasted off into an unhealthy weight gain.

By the time I was 42, I weighed in at 345 lbs at 5' 7". That was around 10 years ago (as I write this, it is June 2008). I thought, "enough is enough," and proceeded to try every diet in the world, finally ending with the Atkins diet. I lost 40 lbs on that diet.

I pretty much kept off about half of the pounds I lost on Atkins.

My approach to diet now is eating 3 main meals a day and two small snacks. I became a vegetarian earlier this year. Being a Texan, you would think that would be impossible, but really, it's been pretty easy.

I eat primarily low-glycemic foods (good carbs). High fiber, whole wheat grain breads, etc.

I get most of my exercise playing drums (good cardio) and add to that recumbent biking and weight lifting.

I have many more pounds to go, but I feel certain I can reach my goal.

My program consist of weighing in once a week, tracking my food in a daily diary, cardio exercise (drums and recumbent bike), weight training, vegetarian diet, low glycemic foods.

    I see low carb has been helpful for you along the way also...I still rely on that...probably too much, need to think about moving in your direction, re: good carbs. The vegan approach has appeal also, but such a radical change is tough to consider making...!

    And a drummer! Been a lifelong guitarist myself...although admit to allowing a bit too much dust to gather on my guitar these jam-packed days!
