I retired from working fulltime at age 69-1/2 due to vision problems (OMG and macular degeneration) and now a year later have gained 20 lbs instead of losing. The weight along with increased degenerative arthritis (widespread) is making it difficult for me to walk again and have resorted to using a walker when I go out. My walking speed is about 1 mile per hour. In addition the side effects from anti-inflammatory drugs have started causing too many side-effects so my doctors won't prescribe any of those any more so losing weight and exercising (as much as possible) and using a tens unit are the only suggestions I have gotten from them of late. So I am trying more seriously to lose weight again and the online interaction at SparkPeople helps allay my feelings of isolation since my husband is in memory care and I have had to give up driving and have moved to an apartment which luckily is on a bus line that goes almost everywhere I need to go. My daughter lives 1000 miles away but she and I Face Time quite often which cheers me up as we have good rapport. She drove 2 days here and 2 days back when I moved near the end of September 2016 and I don't think I would have been able to do it alone.

Update today, May 16, 2018:

So I am still around and still having lots of aches and pains but do know getting to the gym for swimming and other exercises at least 3-4 times a week makes me feel much better. I also have a lot of tendinitis and stretching those tendons and muscles is the only thing that I know of that will eventually help make that discomfort tolerable. And, of course, from my past experience I know that losing weight will definitely help my pain decrease.

Starting today I am signing in to Spark People first thing in the morning and that has always been a positive thing for me.

Hope everybody on Spark People is doing well.

Note added on June 7, 2018:

PS: I lost 20 lbs since last October and and back on track, watching diet (I am prediabetic with A1C at 6.1 since last December), getting more regular exercise and recovering from hairline fracture in foot on April 19th of this year. I walked around with the fracture for 9 weeks before going to orthopedic doctor. Luckily it is almost healed but my tendons are tight from babying the joint. My goal at present is to water walk 1/2 hour a day at the pool in my gym. I started that on June 1st. Today is June 7th and have missed only one day so far but did walk 2 miles that day.

Anyone interested in making homemade yogurt without running out to buy special equipment? This works and as I recall the place I found it said it was "foolproof" which really appealed to me 46+ years ago.

Hippie Yogurt from The Last Whole Earth Catalog:
Yes, you can make it at home and you don't need any thermometers or special equipment, either. This is a recipe that really works; it was printed in The Last Whole Earth Catalog in 1971.

3 cups of instant powdered milk
1/2 tsp. unflavored gelatin
1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
1 large can Pet Evaporated Milk
3 tablespoons yogurt (plain, unflavored)

1. Preheat the oven to about 275o F (between 250o and 300o). Soften the gelatin in measuring cup in a bit of water, then add enough boiling water to make one cup. If you want to add sugar, put it in the cup now. Let the mixture cool.

2. Mix the instant powered milk with three cups of water and stir well.

3. In a large glass or pottery ovenproof bowl, mix the evaporated milk with two cups of tepid water. Add the diluted instant powdered milk, the gelatin mixture and the yogurt. Stir thoroughly.

4. Cover the bowl, put it in the oven and turn the oven off. Leave it overnight or about 10 hours. Then, look in the bowl -- it's yogurt! Yield: two quarts.

My Goals:
Right now I am back to doing baby steps with my weight loss goals so I am not telling everyone how much my ideal weight is, but I do know that in the last few months I have lost about 12 lbs as measured at home in the buff. I always am disappointed when I get weighed at the doctor’s office cause they don’t want me to strip.. (LOL)

I love to laugh and my favorite movies are comedies.

I recently got a smart t.v. And got unplugged from cable and it is saving me a lot of money. I also am watching a lot less t.v. And have seen some very interesting educational type shows that are quite interesting.

Once a week I bus over to the senior center and play Scrabble with a few ladies there. They are not dye-hard players and have some rules they have made up cause they think it is more fun to play with their rules than the standard rules which is sometimes quite comical (I hope none of them belong to SparkPeople). They are a nice group of ladies and I look forward to Thursday afternoons.

I like to play the piano and when I visit my hubby at the NH the residents ask if I will play the piano for them which I am very happy to do. My eyesight is variable but at present I am able to do even better than a year ago reading the music. Unfortunately, I only sight read but that is still fine if I have my rechargeable
