Lately, it occurs to me what a long strange trip its been.

I'm a late-40s, borderline obese, sedentary man with a wife, four sons, and two dogs.

Or I was. I still have the wife, sons, and dogs. My weight has dropped just enough that I'm not officially obese. I'm still working on getting out of the "overweight" category. UPDATE: 8/24/2010 I'm "normal", with a BMI of 24.96.

Mentally, something snapped in March 2010. I just did not want to live the way I was living. I found SparkPeople in April, and I've worked the diet and exercise diligently.

UPDATE: 8/12/2010
122 days later, I've lost 38 lbs (17% of starting weight), spent 130 hours exercising, and changed my life.

My Goals:
Train for a half marathon, even if I don't run one.

Get %Body Fat from 29 to 14% by May 2011. Possibly unrealistic? At ~22% now. @177lbs, lean body wt would have to be ~152. I 'only' need to add 15 lbs of muscle! ADA guidelines are 15-18%. Gotta think this out.

Weigh 177 lbs by 9/15/2010

X Run a 5K. In public. Done - Kings Powder Keg Trail Run, 8/28/2010.
x Weigh 188 lbs by 1 August 2010. 187 8/4.
x Run 35 miles between 7/13/10 and 7/20/10. Done - 37.7!
x Run 5 miles in 60 minutes between 7/3 - 7/11
x Run 5K in 30 minutes or less by July 1st. Done - 6/28/2010
x Get fit enough to take up kayaking! Done 6/5/2010

1 hour per day, every day.
5 x 4+ mi @ 'easy' pace
1 x 9 mi @ 'slow' pace
1 tempo or hill run

Personal Trainer 2x Week - Whole Body

Personal Information:
I've been married to my college sweetheart for 26 years and have 4 teenage sons and two dogs. I work as a computer engineer in IT for a very big company. My hobbies are health & fitness, paddle sports, and trying to stay sane. I'm on facebook, or take firstname.lastname at to email me

Yep, a fellow refugee from West Lafayette. also one from a large major corp---worked for EDS for nine years before moving on.

I can't wait until I can go back into the pool-but have to wait because of the incision. They will keep me out at least 6 weeks and probably 8 weeks post-surgery. It also did wonders for my back too.

I've got the frame for a skin-on-frame kayak built. I need to add floorboards and a seat, then skin it. I've been busy lately, so I don't know when I'll finish it. I'll probably build a plywood stitch-and-glue next. JEM watercraft has some nice plans.

Did you ever decide what sort of boat to build? I've been looking at them too, and don't think it's in the cards for a while but seems like it could be a good option for sometime in the future.
