I started on Spark in Feb 2007 and at the end of summer 2007, I'd lost 30 pounds and reached a low weight of 144, and did my first triathlon on August 26 2007. I looked and felt awesome.

Over the next two years, I would gain 10-15lbs in the winter, and then lose again in the summer.

The same pattern has held true each year, but now I'm bouncing between a higher start and end weight -- the lowest I've been since summer 2008 is probably 160.

Lots of little fits and starts to try to do better, but nothing has stuck. 8 years and I don't seem to have learned anything except how to yo-yo. I know HOW to lose weight, but I don't know how to motivate myself, or to maintain losses. For me it seems to be all or nothing, which is not a long term solution...

After gaining 45 pounds during my first pregnancy, I'm back down to my pre-pregnancy weight, but still a good 25 lbs above a healthy long-term weight, and things have shifted and I've lost a lot of fitness.

I'm reading a lot about WHAT foods to eat, and I'm more and more convinced that watching carbs (not counting veggies!!) is the way to go. I'm also trying for good gut health.

My Goals:
I want to avoid my nemesis (sugar), be consistently active, and keep my body in a state in which I feel athletic and not slobby.
I want to lose between 30 and 40 pounds total and find and maintain a healthy adult weight. I want to continue improving my running and biking strength and speed and continue to compete in races.

My Program:
Eat lots of veggies! No sugar or processed food. Keep grains to a minimum except on high cardio days. Drink lots of water and get lots of good fat and protein.

10k steps per day at least 6 days a week. Add activity into daily life wherever possible.

Personal Information:
I'm Martha, I'm 36, from Virginia, but living in Connecticut with my husband, my son, and our cat. I work a desk job with some travel.

Other Information:
Music is central to my life and keeps me going. A good song will make me move, or help conquer my fear if I'm trying to ski a hard trail.
I also like to read, and like re-reading favorite books (I think I must have the record for number of times reading Pride and Prejudice.)

No sugar for two weeks!? You go girl! I'm so glad to see you rockin' and rollin' again. You're such a great inspiration for me (you and Monica both put me to shame)! Keep up the great work, and make those lifestyle changes stick!

I almost want to start up a thread in the old PDP team so we'll have somewhere to chat! (I might, in fact, as I think they delete old unused teams and I'd be sad to see it go!) I've been thinking a lot about your blog post, and about foods I would like to cut out of my diet. I'm sipping a cup of decaf coffee and wondering whether the coffee, splenda, or half-and-half cream is worst for me. Sip, sip, sip. Mmmmm.

Fruit-flavoured greek yogurt though, that can go.

Splenda in general could go... am I allowed to replace it with any sweetener? I bought stevia when I was on my detox last year, I could try that again. Who knows if that's better. I did swap to a "naturally sweetened" whey protein powder recently, so I'm already making little steps to get off the chemical sweeteners.

Cold cereals too. Can I keep my plain old Cheerios? The high fibre, high protein cereal I usually eat also has sugar, sadly. You're so right about the cereal. Sighhh.

Anyway - thanks so much for posting and getting me thinking, and know that I'm with you 100%! I was having a moment tonight where I was feeling really hopeless and already wondering if it would be so bad to be my current weight forever... it wouldn't, but I can do better. In the short term, at least! emoticon And for the long haul, like you. Thinking of my SparkFriends was a good pick-me up and re-motivator. Let me know if you ever need a boost! Rachele and I facebook-message each other occasionally, since that's more immediate (if your smartphone is smart enough, that is!)

Hugs! Stick with it! Let me know what challenges and thoughts tomorrow brings. emoticon

Good morning and happy weekend! Got a little free time to do some Sparking now that it's a weekend? Hope to see you around! My heart is cheering for you desperately!!! emoticon

For a little something new, I'm joining a 5% challenge that starts March 17 and thought I'd invite you to join me. How many years has it been since we did one of these?! You interested? I figure if I can drag a few of my wonderful friends into it with me, it's a good deal for all involved! (LOL particularly us if we actually commit!) Right?

Check out the 5% Spring Challenge team on my SparkPage and join the team, then post on the A-team's thread to request to be placed on that team. Hope you're interested! Anything to keep us connected and on track, right?

How goes? How's the tracking coming? How about water drinking? Little healthy baby steps? Shall I just keep prodding you here via your SparkPage? :)

How about a solid week of logging in daily? Can you commit to it? I'd love to see your pretty face around here more often!

I'm going to measure tomorrow too... we'll see how things are going. emoticon
