In Buddhist philosophy, the Middle Way or Middle Path refers to the practice of non-extremism. Following the Middle Way means living life with balance, not over-indulging but not depriving yourself from the pleasures of life. It is this balance which the Buddha said brings knowledge and insight.

As I come back to Spark after a hiatus the wisdom of the Middle Way resonates loud and clear for me. Throughout my life I've struggled with being overweight, losing weight and then gaining it back again. Over the last 8 months, I've had another 30 pound swing in my weight and find myself back at square one.

I've realized that my approach to fitness and health has not followed the Middle Way. When I start a healthy program I quickly find myself going to the extreme of deprivation or setting goals that are not sustainable over the long term. The result of this is always weight loss for me, but then after some time I'm unable to sustain my program and I fall back into old habits of over indulgence.

As I begin again, I want to remind myself to follow the Middle Way in all that I do. Small efforts over the long term will have greater results. I promise to show kindness towards myself and have the patience to begin again, to gently bring my focus back to my health much like I bring my attention back to my breath during meditation.

I want to feel healthier.
