In the past few months, I've moved 1200 miles away from my hometown of 30 years, closed my photography studio, changed careers, graduated with a bachelors degree and started a masters degree. It seems like my life keeps getting busier, and all I want to do is simplify it. My goal is to change my lifestyle to a healthier, more active life and focus on the important things.

Four months ago, we literally gave away almost everything we owned and relocated from gorgeous San Diego to the middle of nowhere in Texas for one year. My husband is a fulltime student and SAHD, while I teach for a local college and begin work on my masters degree.

We have this special "year off," while my husband is in school. We get to see each other every day and get to know and appreciate each other all over again. After that, we'll be relocating elsewhere, and things will change.

I want to enjoy every moment of this and take advantage of it to its fullest. That also means not wasting every moment with unhealthy choices. Going from an area with that was very health-centric to a town that doesn't have a single healthy salad bar and a nonexistent organic produce selection has been a huge culture shock! As I learn more about the chemicals that are in our food and products, it scares me. I've made a huge effort to try to buy organic, buy local, and invest in products that are healthier - no more plastic plates, water bottles, etc.

Since moving here, I've joined a gym, and I'm getting back into running with the C25K program and am working out at least 4 days a week.

I hope that by the time our year is up (next August), I will be maintaining my goal weight. I'm not in this to drop weight quickly and go back to bad habits, I've done that plenty of times. I know that it has to be a lifestyle change. I'm changing the way I eat, my activity levels, the way I think about food, and the types of food that my family eats.
