I am a 31 year-old mathematician, married, and have been overweight my entire life. I guess I should really ask my mother if that's true. Growing up, I was an avid camper and did some backpaking, but I started losing energy around college age. That's when I really got out of shape.

Due to professional considerations, I've had to move frequently, and have lived in four different states in the last decade. I'm really hoping to settle down soon.

I am on cholesterol medication and antidepressants. I am very worried about heart disease, diabetes and other obesity related illnesses, which I do seem to have in my family history, so hope that this time I can get the weight off and keep it off.

My Goals:
I would like to:

Get out of the "obese" category.

Get off cholesterol medication (may be an impossible goal).

Increase my walking ability so that 10 miles a day isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Start backpacking again.

My Program:
Portion control is key for me. I'm trying to record everything I eat and NOT eat everything on my plate at a restaurant. I am also making an effort to keep my sodium intake in the recommended range (which is hard). I am also keeping water in easy reach at all times.

I'm trying to be consistent with exercise. This includes walking to and from work and exercise videos. I have a pedometer, and am increasing my step goal. As of Nov 1, 2010, my step goal is 7500 steps per day. I am also giving myself periodic "weekend challenges" for getting well over my daily goals. To get back to backpacking, these weekend goals will gradually increase. In addition, I enjoy water aerobics so have added the one exercise class to my schedule.

I grew up in Southern California and currently reside in the DC area of Maryland. I am a mathematician by training and inclination. I go by Lizz in real life.

    Since I am a Navy brat, I guess I developed skills making new friends just to is very important to find new friends just to feel whole...I found my newest "old" friend, just by taking some tennis is so great to find new friends who share your interests...."regular" friends are fine, but ones that share a passion of yours are the best!

    Seek and you shall find....glad to hear you will check out the animal shelter...they always appreciate help (you may find some really "out there" animal fanatics...but anyone who loves animals, loves good people too). They can always use old towels, blankets, etc.....if you have any kicking around the house...probably not since you just moved...just a thought...I pick ones up from thrift shops to drop off there....
