I am back with spark people so that I can get fit enough to climb another mountain. A few years ago my son and I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. It was an awesome adventure.

I had never traveled to Africa, but my son had gone to South Africa for a summer college course and to Ghana to help build a school. At the end of his junior year he let me know that he wanted to climb Kilimanjaro with me the following summer.

I bought good boots and spent a year training. I mostly climbed stairs every morning and did yoga at night. Weekends I took long hikes. Strength training core development and aerobics were key to developing the necessary balance and capacity for breathing at altitude.

I worried about altitude sickness, but you can't train your way out of that risk unless you have high mountains to climb, and there were none near me. I also worried about my knees, so I watched my diet, convinced that what I didn't eat I wouldn't have to haul up the mountain. I lost a total of about 45 lbs.

The climb was stunning. Five days up and two days down. The day of the summit climb we started at midnight, reached the rim at sunrise, and climbed down until 7 pm. I've never been so tired in my life.

Afterward I gained the weight back, got busy, stopped the training, and basically let myself go. I had many excuses, but no good reasons.

July 20, 2008 I found sparkpeople on line. I remembered how good it felt to be able to do something challenging. I decided to be fit again. By June 2009 I lost 75 lbs. and met my goal! After a few months I started to slip back away from my healthy habits.

I am tracking my food again, and I am trying to redevelop good exercise habits.

My first time on sparkpeople I rediscovered how good it feels to be alive. I am eager to move back toward that joy.

My body is a gift from God. If I treat it well it will make me capable of doing a lot of great things. I have really wasted some of that capacity by not getting enough exercise and eating too much.

Life is too good to waste sitting on the side lines. Today is the day to get back in the game. Machu Picchu awaits!

Wow! Mt Kilimanjaro! What a feeling of exhilaration that must have been. You'll get back on the mountaintop again. I'm sure of it. Ann
