Grandmother, kid’s costume maker, half marathon runner

Weight issues run in my family on my mother’s side. Almost all the women struggle with maintaining a healthy weight. I have had some extra weight for much of my adult life and have tried various diets and plans to try to shed the pounds, but over the last few years, my weight has gone up and up. I was shocked when I stepped on the sale for the first time in several months and it showed I was nearly 30 lbs heavier than I was just days before I gave birth to my son, nearly 23 years ago.

I think I can tie a lot of my over eating in the last few years to my emotional state. I used to have a stressful job, then I went back to college. Shortly after, I found myself caring for my infant granddaughter when my daughter moved home. That’s when my weight really started to climb. After a couple of years of constant arguments, my daughter moved out, without her child. Now my husband and I are raising a high energy and highly emotional child on our own. I am in the process of opening my own children’s clothing company and it’s been a rocky journey, keeping my stress levels elevated. Stress leads me to pay less attention to what I eat and increases the likelihood that I will reach for comfort food and other unhealthy choices.

I have tried using exercise to help manage my weight. It’s helped some, but even participating in half marathons hasn’t been completely effective. I train for a few months to get ready for my race season, and in my downtime, I’m too relaxed in monitoring my calorie intake. The result is not ideal.

I can’t keep doing this. It’s not healthy for me and it’s not helping my grand kids learn healthy habits. I need to create a new relationship with food, to learn proper portion sizes, and to be consistent with my efforts. I’ve fallen into the trap of thinking that weight loss is a one time event, but that thinking has to change as it’s a lifelong commitment and I need to become fully committed.
