I am a registered nurse for over 25 years and also have a back conditiion which causes pain in several areas of my lower back, sacral region and hips.I went to a Physiatrist (doctors who treat conditions that have to do with muscles, ligaments and supporting structures of the body as a whole.) After going to physical therapy for years, being told that my pain resulted from a myriad of causes the physiatrist diagnosed the hip pain as HIP BURSITIS and gave me one painless injection of Prednisone in each hip-the sides of the hip.Not all Orthopedists or Physiatrists know how to inject skillfully, thus eradication pain from the injection. In a few days the Hip Pain was gone.

Now to attack the lower back pain and sacral pain.I was given a series of three injections under flouroscopy ( so the physician can visualize the nerves) of Prednisone. It may take several weeks for the medication to kick in but in my case after three weeks the pain in both areas was gone. When there were breakthroughs of pain two Ibuprofen( Advil) taken in the morning and night took the pain away for long periods of time. The Prednisone can reduce inflammation but if you twist the wrong way or do other things that hurt the back , Prednisone can't completely eradicate the pain caused from these physical actions.
I learned that bacvk pain with acn be aggrevated by facet joint arthritis responds to these injections because Prednisone is an anti inflammatory medication.
There were certain exercises that I was cautioned against.

No twisting movements, no leg raises to the side which might aggrevate the Hip Bursites, no leg raises which in my case pulled on the muscles of the lower back.

Stretching was okay. The MOST IMPORTASNT information that my physical therapist and physiatrist taught me were PROPER BODY MECHANICS which needs to be incorporated into activities of daily living. They are designed to help you bend and ambulate without working through your back!!
It takes time to be aware of how you are using your body to pick up things from the floor, and do chores etc, without using back and sacral muscles.
Therefore exercise needs to be TAILORED to specific areas of back pain .One also has to take into consideration how other muscles will respond to certain you have shoulder bursites which would eliminate exercises that strain these muscles? Do you have other problems that might be aggrevated by certain excercises.
I am not advocating to anyone any of the procedures that I went through. My goal is to make people aware of the fact that back pain is a multi-faceted problem that doesn't respond to all kinds of excercises and even Prednisone Injections.
Know why you are doing certain excercises and if they increase your pain; STOP DOING THEM.
There are other conditions that require surgery but I have been writing about the type of chronic back pain that is not an indication for surgery.
You might want to Google a picture of the spine that includes the facet joints and educate yourself about back anatomy.

    Regarding Back Pain.
After going to physical therapy for almpost a uear and a half, getting Prednisone FACET JOINT and LUMBAR INJECTIONS I now use a moist heating pad to relieve my back pain and have found this to be very helpful. The moist heating pad takes the pain away after 2 hours and then I use the pad sitting at the computer, the couch, the table. This regime has relaxed and retrained the muscles that have been in spasm.
