In June 2017, I finally went to the doctor about my back and leg pain that has been keeping me from exercising. The diagnosis is degenerative spondylolisthesis, where one vertebra has slipped over another, an extra lumbar vertebra and severe arthritis. The spine specialist said, "Surgery!"

This complex surgery has a very difficult recovery. Is this what I want to face at 54 years old? It's time to drop my excess weight and get back on the bike and get SERIOUS about how I want to live and the quality of that life. No more sitting at the sideline...

About me, 2018:
On my way back down to healthy and fit! I've cleaned up my diet, have removed the sugar/flour/processed foods again and am eating three whole-food meals. Lots of vegetables!

March 2018, Bright Line Eating/Clean Eating principles

03/17/18 - 160.0
03/24/18 - 156.0
03/31/18 - 153.5

04/14/18 - 151.0
04/21/18 - 149.5
04/28/18 - 149.5

I did it before, in 2011, dropping from 168 to 118 lbs through healthy eating and exercise and loving life. I had been laid off for the first time in my life and went back to college! I got a two-year health degree, graduating with flying colors. **EVERYTHING** I was doing was for me, to be my best. Life was very good.

I re-entered the workforce in March 2013 (software engineer), less than a month after my beloved dad died suddenly, and began sitting again.
I was working long hours, with more stress in my life, and sitting a lot.
I began spending every Thursday dinner and overnight with my mom.
I slowly, little-by-little, gave it ALL back. It's time to take up the reigns once again and take back my health, create new wins!

Successful challenge! I went out to graduation looking and feeling my best, under 125lbs and ready for anything! I DID IT * I DID IT * YES!!

Starting in 2008, Hello Sparkpeople!! About me:

I have been overweight most of my life, except for several forays into fad diet land. Exercise was never part of the equation, nor was the notion of a truly healthy "lifestyle" until I joined Sparkpeople in 2008. I came to know and love the food tracker and really started to understand what makes up a good, balanced diet. I also joined in with regular exercise, though the food part seems to come a little easier for me when I am on a roll.

Then I hurt my knee and tests showed an unrelated but scary bone disease that had my orthopedist saying it's time for non-impact exercising only. Great, just when I was getting my groove on!

I got myself down from 173-171 to within 5 pounds of 133, my original goal that first year here, and let the diagnosis and other things totally derail me for far too long!!! With some retooling I am figuring out the magic Sparky formula to conquer the weight and fitness for GOOD!! I'm back to Sparky basics. Accountability is the order of the day - EVERY day! Open trackers that are getting populated with healthy choices and good, consistent exrcise. I am feeling SPARKY! WOO-HOO!! Who's with me? Here's to my Sparky accountability buddies and SparkPeople!

It's time to stay serious about my fitness and clean eating habits. Consistency, no matter what!

We're all in this together, we're all in this together.

please...have your brother get to a doc familiar with Lyme. Lyme lesions on the brain mimic MS...I am NOT even remotely suggesting he doesnt have MS, but there have been many misdiagnsis..especially if they think he has had lyme. they thought i had everything from alzheimers to MS to finally settling on that i was a hypoochondriac. i wasnt...i was dealthy ill. and Lyme CAN be cured easily IF caught early. mine wasnt diagnosed for 3 years, severe permanent damage had been done, so they call me "in remission". Keto has really helped with the residual symptoms...

Thank you for the blog support, and for emphasizing the positive in the struggle -- it IS a sign of progress that the foods don't taste or feel as good.
