March 6, 2021 Update:

I just finished the 2021 Winter 5% Weight Loss Challenge with a 2.5 pound loss. Yeah!

January 2, 2021

In one week, on January 9, the 2021 Winter 5% Weight Loss Challenge begins. My interim goal was to start at or below my ending weight from the last challenge, and I'm happy to say I'll be able to do that, provided I don't indulge in anymore unexpected ice cream purchases. What was I thinking?

My Goals:
I want to stay healthy, mobile, and lean for the rest of my life.
I'd like to follow "The Younger Next Year" advice including 60 minutes of exercise 6 days a week for the rest of my life.
Return to the healthy weight I maintained in my 40s, now that I've hit my 60s.
Continue to run/walk, and exercise with intensity.

My Program:
March 6, 2021 Update:
Exercise has to be my priority.
1. Jog outdoors 3 to 4 times a week, increasing my steady state distance.
2. Do 4x4 HIIT once a week, or use quick intervals known as "strides."
3. Use Essentrics videos for mobility and flexibility. Start on non-running days, working toward daily.
4. Monitor my fitness levels using heart rate.
5. Revise my program when we go to our southwestern home if the fitness center or pool are available.

Nutrition Goals:
1. Make a conscious effort to increase water intake, 5-6 cups; 8 cups is not realistic for me.
2. Reduce alcohol consumption.
3. Monitor trigger foods closely.
4. Eat a Mediterranean diet as much as possible.

Accountability Goals:
1. Weigh-in weekly, Saturdays for the 2021 Spring 5% Challenge.
2. Post exercise, LTGL goals every day.

Personal Information:
My DH and I are retired. Both of us were reared on family farms, so we love open space and quiet whenever possible. We are able to travel between those two farms, as well as to winter in the Southwest for health reasons.

Other Information:
I love baking, cooking, and eating. So aside from a sweet tooth, I cook from scratch and have a relatively healthful diet. I enjoy sewing, knitting, reading, and gardening when on the farm. As a person on faith, I believe it's important to care for ourselves, others, and our planet.

Thank you for your nice comment on my blog. Of the two friends that are participating, one is in it for life...she started over a year ago and is in the maintenance phase which allows some carbs. My other friend has been doing it since Jan...I don’t know how she’ll do in the long run. She has struggled w her weight for many years like I have.

I’ve been testing the waters, so to speak, this week and it will be a real challenge for me. We had two functions yesterday that involved restaurant dining for two meals. One meal was planned, so I couldn’t make any changes to that high carb meal. The other meal I made good choices, but I still gained a pound overnight. I’m sure they were both heavily seasoned in salt...ugh. I’ll be working my Fanny off today! Lol

Thank you for reading my blog “Life in the Middle of the Road” and sharing your story
I can relate. Sadly calling someone "skinny minnie" and/or "gym rat" has become acceptable to many people. Trackers keep me focused on reality and your comments keep me motivated to keep going.

Lovely that you could have friends over. I find it still feels strange to actually invite people into my home, but it certainly is wonderful!

emoticon for the blog comment. You made me think about body composition — yes, at that weight 30 years ago I didn’t have the arm flab and belly fat. emoticon
