I'm an over-thirty, under-forty, tree-hugging, Renaissance Festival lackey, homeschooling mother of two. I have PCOS with Insulin Resistance and I'll gladly tell you about it. I want other women to never go through what I have. I want them to find a cure so that my daughter doesn't have to struggle. I'm absolutely stunned and amazed at how many people I know who have PCOS and didn't say a word until I was diagnosed. I'm frustrated at how many women have symptoms, and are mistreated because people assume that if they just ate a little less and exercised more, they'd be able to lose the weight. I want the public educated about this disease!

I feel like I lost my youth to obesity caused by PCOS and Insulin Resistance. Now I'm fighting it!

INTRO FROM APRIL 2008: I've been dealing with weight issues pretty much all my life. My mother likes to tell the story about how at age one, when I weighed twenty pounds, the doctor informed her that she would have to cart me around in a wagon. That set the stage for the rest of my childhood. At thirteen, weighing 133 pounds and at my current height of 5'4", I was placed on Weight Watchers. Looking back, that wasn't such a horrible thing, but at the time it screamed to me how shameful my weight was. I began starving myself, and it worked--I went down to 110 pounds for all of maybe two minutes in my teen years. It didn't last, and I've been steadily gaining ever since, despite the ability to go long periods without food, and in spite of any excercise program I followed.

Now I'm 35, and I've been diagnosed with PCOS. What a relief! I've been showing symptoms since I was a teenager, and it helps explain why I've never successfully lost any weight. After years of trying and failing to lose, and having every single health problem I've ever had blamed on the weight, I'm so happy to have some control over my situation handed back to me. I'm following a very low-carb diet, and trying to introduce excercise back into my life. (Any suggestions on excercises would be appreciated. I sprained my ankle badly and the recovery is going very slowly. I can't bend my ankle at all, which prevents me from walking very far, pedaling a bike, and going down stairs. Yes, I'm doing stretches. No, it hasn't improved my flexibility. But I'm still trying.)

Since I began to manage the PCOS, I've lost 11 pounds. I spend a lot of time terrified that I'll gain it all back. I spend a slighty smaller amount of time scared that I won't lose any more. I fight very hard to make sure that I eat because I'm also frightened that my metabolism will slow down (even more) and make it even harder to lose weight. I'm just a mass of neuroses!

Found an exercise program that I could do, stuck with it.

I need to get my cardio up to 30 minutes--achieved!

Lower my dose of Lipitor--cut in half August 2008!

My Program:
1. Taking Glucophage to manage PCOS.

2. Limiting carbohydrates to between 50 and 100 grams a day, avoiding refined carbs like the plague.

3. 45 minutes of cardio five times a week, 30 minutes of weights twice a week. Stretch every day!

Personal Information:
Stay at home mom who never seems to stay home!

Other Information:
Everything I've achieved has been one little step at a time. And sweatbands are WONDERFUL for keeping sweat out of your eyes!

    According to the nutritionist at my doctor's office, I should keep my carbs between 30 and 50 a day. However, I've had MORE success losing weight when I relax the restriction to less than 100 a day, so I've been more casual about it lately. I keep losing my book, so I haven't finished reading, so I'm still not sure how to use the diet. I'm definitely interested in joining the new group, though!

    Hey So happy you are doing SO well. I try to keep my carbs 30 per meal so under 100 or ishish. So do you balance the carbs you eat through the day limiting the total to 50?
