Hello, my name is Ashley.

Written May 7 2007 on another site, but it's why I'm here...

Last year I decided to join here for the tickers mostly. I was running with a friend. Something I had missed since quiting after high school. College added a few pounds. Eating out with my friends and my then boyfriend added more pounds in the next two years. When I got pregnant I weighed 175. I only gained 15 pounds, and shed them by my six week check up. I lost more weight planning our wedding, working full time, and living with my in-laws (I went for a lot of walks.) I did the diet plan from Ishape.com in the three months following our wedding and lost another 10 or so pounds. I think at this point I was down to 160 or so.

Then we moved...suddenly no on questioned where I was so I sat around more. I have food issues, and am constantly paranoid about people watching me eat. They weren't around anymore so I ate whatever and whenever I wanted. Last year when I finally bought a scale and climbed on I weighed 211. That eleven more pounds than I weighed at 9 months pregnant. I'm a pagan though, and we are not a people that stay away from junk food. We eat to ground ourselves. I was hanging out with women larger than myself, and not feeling bad about it. A women I was quickly becoming friends with told me that just the year before she was 300 pounds, and at 24 the doctors were talking about doing surgery. I told her how much I used to love to run, and she said. "I would like to try that sometime." The next week we were out at the park. We ran from June to October following the couch to 5K. Although I got the plan off runnersworld.com, so the workouts are just a little different. I lost 6 pounds by October. (We were eating out a lot. )

We stopped running for whatever reason. A mental wall I suppose. Running is full of those. I gained back the weight by Dec or Jan. At the end of Jan. I bought an Ipod and a nike Later my life changed in a way I never saw coming.

My coach from high school cross-country and track team died. He had a brain tumor. He was so much more to me than a couch or teacher. The first night I went running this year was on the day of his death. Out of grief I decided to run a race this year. I can't let a wonderful skill he taught me to be swept away with laziness. It's a gift to be able to run, and be active. We live in a greedy society and yet take for granted the best gift so many of us our given, our health. This man started every day my saying, "It's a great day to be young and alive!" and damn it, it is!

So, in four days I will be running my first 5K in seven years. I've been training since March first and I'm down eight pounds. I also know that I can run this with no problem. I'm proud of myself, and I can't wait to have my picture taken at the finish line. (As anyone with weight to lose knows...a camera is a scary thing.) I don't care how much I have left to lose though. I know I can do it, and I hope that some day the picture of me is me crossing a marathon finish line.

Today... I ran that race, and then a memorial for my coach in July. I've been training for the 25K race here. I ended up having to bail out do to injury, but I'm up and running again. My next race is eight and half weeks away. I'm really bummed that I'm not racing this weekend, but it's time to move forward. Only 40 more pounds to my ideal weight, and thousands of miles to run in this lifetime!
