I remember being 7 years old and admiring a classmate of mine. She was tall, skinny, flawless. My mother adored her. At this point, I was in cheerleading, with that same girl, and felt inadequate. I felt like my mother would come to my competitions to watch my classmate, instead of her own daughter. I remember, even at 7 years of age, thinking, 'what could I do for my mother to pay more attention to me, instead of the skinny girl next to me?' But I think that instead of changing my eating habits, even then, I dove into food for comfort. Which is where I stand today; a girl with low-esteem(although I don't show it) and a weight issue to battle. I should have never been a 7 year old cheerleader. I lost my Grandpa late March 2010 to obesity. He was nearly 400 pounds. He couldn't sleep right, partly because he couldn't breathe from the extra weight. He couldn't walk at a steady pace or even walk up the stairs without losing his breath. I think that lit a fire. At the time I said, 'I will never lose my life to something that is clearly preventable.' Well, upon his death, I was going through a really rough patch in my life; I was 1200 miles away from my family, which led to slight depression, which made me turn to food. Well, I'm back in Michigan with my family close by. No excuses. Time to put on my tennis shoes and get active.
