I joined Spark in May 2009 and lost 50 lbs by Nov 2009 working the Spark program. Then I let family issues sidetrack me and I gained 30 lbs back.

My husband Steve and I last spring began a moderate exercise program. Just trying to walk 4 times a week.

On May 31,2011, Steve had a heart attack while driving home from work, crashed his car and died. He was only 55 years old. My whole world came to a crashing halt as well...





I'm 49 and FAT! I've been fat and then thin back and forth all of my life. I am so tired of being sick and tired! I've got to do it for good this time!

Update 11/21/2009 - 54 lbs.down-6 months into Spark...

Well I'm still 49, but I am 100% healthier than I was when I started Spark in May 2009. I have decided to embrace the Spark program to the best of my ability. I have been exercising 5 mornings a week before work using free workout videos. I started with Coach Nicole's 10 min workouts on Spark and have graduated to the free Workouts on Comcast On Demand. I am a Jillian Michaels groupie. I like that she's tough and no nonsense. I have been tracking my food and fitness. I am on Spark twice a day. I find that tracking after work lets me know how many calories I have left for dinner and how much more fitness I need to get in before the day in over.

That in no way means I have been perfect at it. I've fallen off the wagon and have been frustrated many times. I've hit a few plateaus and have felt sorry for myself. But when those times happened, I didn't quit. Quitting is how I used to handle things that didn't come easy. This time when I find myself having a hard time I blog about it, talk to a Spark Friend about it, or read Spark info to help me thru it.
I am competitive by nature, so Spark Teams and Challenges have been very good for me. I like being held accountable for my weight loss program. Its funny that a silly challenge to lose a certain amount of weight by a certain date will motivate me more than just doing it for my own health. That's just my silly quirk.

I have made my health a priority in my life. I have 2 teenagers with special needs and I used to think that I was being selfish to take time for myself. But I have learned that the opposite is true. By not taking time for myself, I was just wallowing in self-pity about my weight situation. Now I am showing my children (and Husband) by example that your health is important. I am WORTH the effort that it takes to get and stay healthy. I am a much happier mom and wife. My kids are seeing that setting a goal and working towards it is important. Its not easy, but we can all accomplish what we really put our mind to.

I will update again on April 26, 2010, my 50th birthday . By then I hope to be Fit and Fabulous!

    That IS the way to look at it--We ARE changing--be it slower than we wish--we are growing--learning about ourselves--and our triggers
    SO--what is Karen gonna do to take good care of herself??whats your strategy gonna be this week--got one??me neither--I just love the way it feels to wake up and know I didn't "blow it" the night before--so THAT is my strategy--loving myself that way..how does that sound?? emoticon
