Almost four years in Austin now. Still miss the changing of seasons. Gains and losses and gains again during my time here...time now to buckle down again. In the middle of remodeling my kitchen and breakfast room. I have all the usual remodel stories of things going awry. It was to be expected with a condo that had seen no remodeling since its build date in the late seventies. Countertops are going in tomorrow. They need to look beyond gorgeous. It was an indulgence to choose a painfully expensive quartz to begin with. But it is even more expensive now, and there is no hope for it. The original measurement estimate was off by 14 square feet...not in my favor. Oh, ouch. This has been such a trial that I suspect I shall just continue to live with the dismal bathroom. Well, maybe I'll take out the medicine cabinet, change the light fixture, paint, put in some shelves...

ARCHIVED: January is my one year anniversary as an Austinite. A year ago, I happily left the snowbelt I had lived in for almost twenty years. I knew I needed to return to a warmer climate to be able to work on getting myself back into any kind of shape. And, IT WORKED! I have my balance back. I not only walk without a cane now, I regularly go on 4+ mile walks! I have also done three 10k walks to date. I have lost some weight. Now I am working toward more weight loss goals and on total body fitness. I am doing the January Jumpstart Challenge. Even though the daily video workouts need a lot of modification for me to complete them, I am not throwing my hands up in despair or defeat. I am plodding on.

ARCHIVED -- Milestone: One Year of Retirement. I have passed another mile marker. I have been retired for one year. In that year, I turned 65, I traveled, I moved out of the Midwest where work had taken me (and moved back to some heat), I began to get healthier, I gained and lost a little weight, etc. Now, I am looking forward to visiting with family arriving for my son's imminent wedding. After that, I'll figure out what's in store for me in my second year of retirement.

ARCHIVED - The New Normal: After three and a half years of serious medical issues that had me in and out of hospitals and surgeries and such, I am changed and need to rebuild muscle and then develop muscle strength. I also need to lose weight and increase energy. Since I have now retired and moved to Austin, Texas, I have time to put this Humpty Dumpty back together again and I can do it in an city that celebrates health and fitness. It will not be easy, and I won't be able to get to where I was before all this happened. I just want to be the best me that I can be.

I hope the remodeling is going well. It's often very frustrating but it will be worth it when it's done. I'm sorry that you're too busy to communicate directly right now but the early photos are wonderful. Hoping we can get together again here or on facebook. Be well. Larry

Sorry about the all caps in my user name. Caps locked on and I didn't notice. My daughter wants me to take my grandson out of day care one day this week. She dropped me off at my house after dinner and Brendon cried to come in. I miss him too. I don't see him much now that he's in daycare. I'm doing pretty good on my food trackers but not with water. 8-8 oz waters bloat me by the end of the day. Might need to be happy with 6. Evenings are hard for me. That's when I habitually snack, and snack etc. It helps to count calories because I don't want to go over my daily totals. Oh well. A long way to go.

There's a box on my page that is titled "current status". What am I supposed to write there?

The photo of me with my sister and brother on my Sparkpage, was taken after my struggle with PAN (neuropathy), the weight gain and the weight loss but before the hospital stay last year and the regain of more weight after surgery. I can get back to what I was in the photo (205 lbs) but plan to get back to 195 and then maintain.

The brother in that photo passed away last year. He was ten years younger than me but fought with weight all his life. He died too soon.

Your story is inspirational. I would like to think that I'd do as well but after five months on interferon I was done. I was told that there's a very high suicide rate for people on that med but I assured them that I would never feel like giving up. I was wrong. As I understand it, what you went through was worse. Kudos to your will to survive.

I have always admired you. Never more so than now.

Did you know that if you're hungry a carrot is a great way to stay hungry?
