I'm getting back to being fit after many years of NOT being fit. Actually, though I was a runner and into sports when I was young, I doubt I was ever REALLY fit. I did what I needed to do when I needed to do it. My attidute this time around is that I want to do the MAXIMUM of what I'm capable of, and not the minimum, whether it be nutrition or fitness. Instead of asking myself, "what is the most I can eat and still lose weight?", I'mlearning to ask myself "what is the most GOOD food I can eat, and the least "bad," and continue to lose weight?"

I want to enjoy running again, after years of not running. I've been hiking a lot, but I also have Plantar fasciitis, which is irritation and swelling of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot. The most common complaint is pain in the bottom of the heel. It is usually worst in the morning and may improve throughout the day. By the end of the day the pain may be replaced by a dull aching that improves with rest. Most people complain of increased heel pain after walking for a long period of time. In other words, after walking, I can pay by feeling like a cripple for days afterward. Very annoying.

I like running - feeling the wind - but right now, my weight and fitness levels just don't support that. I'm working on it. I've struggled for years with my weight, and with some pretty sucky metabolic issues which, in my doctor's words, made me "weight loss resistant." I had a surgery in July, 2009, called Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, to help me lose the weight. For years before, I'd told myself that was the "easy way out" and hadn't done it. But it's not easy - and you know, if it helps someone improve their quality of life, it's a good thing, so any of you naysayers out there can go suck an egg.

Fitness Minutes: 130

My Goals:
Goal1: To get to a healthy weight.

Goal 2: To run a 5k

My Program:
I'm on a higher protein, lower calorie diet. Three bites lean protein to every one bite of anything else. I'm trying to get in at least 30 minutes cardio 5 to 6 days per week, anaerobic at least 3 times per week.

Personal Information:
I live in the Triangle area of NC. I have a wide and wonderful group of friends, and I'm enjoying my life more than I ever have. I let a lot of things go during my marriage (divorced over two years now), including some of my self-esteem, and I'm regaining that along with my health.

Other Information:
I'm an artist, and would LOVE to one day be making enough on my art to not have to work in the Mental Health arena anymore. I love movies, reading, discussing philosophy.

Welcome to the SP Class Team of September 21-27, 2008! Congratulations on taking the first step to a better lifestyle! Along this journey, we all face difficulties, but it's how we fight our way through them that measures our successes...not how we end up on the other side. Don't get discouraged. I'm always here for support and encouragement. And remember....

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts."
